Does anyone know of place that a VFD unit, with a financially distressed county government & who was just hit by a tornado last weekend(which destroyed our truck), can get any used equipment donated or bought for a very cheap price? Our unit is very new and most of our guys dont even have turnout gear. Thanks a bunch.
Well...If you guys are really in a bad pinch and are mechanically inclined . I would go down to Mexico and refit a used/old Tanker/Pumper plus any gear you can afford. Also look into any grants that may be available from the Red Cross, private philanthropist or NGO's. God luck and God bless. :o) Ms. Traci
Have you tried the Red Cross local or national. They have a group called DAT stands for Disaster Assistance Team. They have funding kicked out nationally and locally to independent chapters. Also FEMA has CERT teams that get the same funding supposed to go toward community response in general. Also what about the local EMA would they you guys out ? - Drew
Thanks for the replies. The President has signed the neccessary paperwork for our area to recieve assistance from FEMA, waiting to see how much they will replace.
Well friend...If Uncle Sam has let you down at "Joe's Auction" on E-bay. They specialise in old cars, motorcycles etc. They have a 1950 pumper with only 5,000 original miles on it. They think it will sell for between 5K and 10K. It looks in good shape. The auction is pretty soon. Best of luck :o) Ms. Traci
Well...Go check out E-bay under agriculture and Forestry. I saw a lot of very cheap nozzles, in-line T's and gated Wye's....different stuff every day. Please check it out. Regards Ms. Traci
Well first off sorry to hear about your situation second off i may be able to help with the turn out gear. We get alot of our turn out gear used from the bigger stations in the area and we also get grants from the school near us. I may be able to send you a few all I ask is that you pay the shipping for it. I can ask around and see if anyone is getting rid of turn out gear. As for money I would check with any college or school near you that has a fire or ems program. The federal government gives schools with those programs grants to spend specifically on VFD for gear, tools and equipment. I would also check to see if there are state and federal grants. I know we apply for them twice a year. Usually they are based on need.
I know that our station in Western Wisconsin will be storing and or looking to get rid of our old uniforms, we've got about another month or so before were all complete with new gear. I know that there are several stations within a 200 mile radius that have a lot of old gear just sitting around. I'd get on the horn and start calling these departments and asking them.
Look on the internet for Western Wisconsin Fire Departments and start calling.
You should be able to apply for FEMA grants and Homeland Security Grants. As far as any special trucks, try Half Moon Vol. Fire Dept. in Onslow County, NC. They possible could have a spare truck or two to send to a more deserving department. I know in the past they sent a truck as far as Oklaloma from Jacksonville, NC. Ask for Mike Richards. he is the Departments current President of the Board of Directors, tell them #549 sent you, & Good luck to you Sir!
