We acquired a large Red Devil fish, that we fundly call Diablo. He lives up to his name. He was up for adoption. We saw him huddled in a corner of a tank at the pet store. He seemed so lonely and docile. Boy..little did we know, haha.
Now we sorta know why he was there, lol. We would not trade him for the world though. Fallen in love with him. Quite a fish-son-ality..haha.
Unfortunately, before putting a divider in -- he ate two blue dolphins and a baby fantosa & electric yellow..that we know of..
We are hoping to get a larger tank for him pretty soon. We love our african cichlids and the tank divider is working out well for now. We have a gorgoues Jack Dempsey, large fantosa, electric yellow, and a couple more beauties..not sure the names.
Diablo is quite a character though. He loves performing somersaults when he see an audience. His crown is very pronounced, his green marbelized eyes & coloring are beautiful, and he is very smart and attentive. From time to time, he opens the lid on the tank and squirts water out. He is just a big floating baby.
My son learned the hard way, to have rubber gloves on when cleaning the tank, however. Ouch! His fins are very sharp.
We love watching him rearrange the tank also. One day there will be two big mountains of rocks, the next day, small curvy hills. All the plants get placed where he wants them too.
He is about 8 years old.
Well, -- any good deals on a larger tank out there? lol. Diablo needs a bigger home. Just a matter of time, I think he will figure out how to take the divider down. He also loves to take the filteration tube down from time to time too - and we've lost a cichlid or two that way. We do have that side of the tank reserved for him now, and the others are on the safer side.
Know it sounds like I'm saying don't get a red devil, but -- nope. They are amazing fish..lol... but for the love of the African Cicchilds..lol, do keep Diablos seperated if you decide to have one.
I really enjoyed your story about your red devil. The local pet store has several in stock and was considering to buy one and put it in my 150 gallon show tank. After reading your story I think I was pass on the idea. I think the other fish would be stessed out to it's aggressve behavior. I have (5) parrots each 4-6", (5) severums each 5", convict 4" and a chocolate plecostomus 10". They all get along well and I don't want to effect the tranquility of the tank.
You mentioned about getting a larger tank. What size are you possibly considering? There are numerous tanks here on ebay but the one's I'm interested in are too far away. I don't think my wife will let me get another oe anyway...we already have 3.
Love the story! If I still had indoor tanks (I've moved onto to Pond fish) I would definitely consider one! We had a very large Oscar the loved to re-arrange the tank too. And a "fish-on-ality" that was pretty neat! Enjoy your Diablo!
Hi eagletime43. I'm glad that I posted my story then. Yes-- good decision not to put a Devil Fish in your already happy fish tank. Even with our new divider, Diablo was able to stack the rocks up in such a way -- that it created a small gap. One of our rare, baby cichilds got too close -- and Diablo sucked her right up.
I'm hoping to get a 100 gallon tank. Our current tank is 55 gallons.
Hi blondenak. Glad you enjoyed reading about our Diablo. :) Thank you! We sure are enjoying Diablo very much, despite his appetite for our cichlids. It's hard to stay mad at him for too long. We've just learned the hard way, not to put anything in the tank that fits in his mouth.
We used to have an Oscar, but he kept biting off more than he could chew, literally. Too many times, we had to take a tweezer, and get a stuck fish out of his mouth to save him. He has a very happy home now, at our local Chinese restaurant, in a large tank in the lobby. He's huge now.
By the way, does anyone know if a Diablo (devil fish) that does somersaults is unique..haha. It probably is, but -- just wondering. Ours does.. and We are surely entertained by this big guy, that's for sure..haha.
