I have a great recepie for tomato sauce and want to start selling it by the jar on e-bay. Does anyone know if you can sell food and what the rules are. Does not seem to be a big item on e-bay.
Useful Funny
In order to sell food that you create it has to be produced in a food safe environment. You can't just can something and then sell it. You have to check the laws in your state for safe food handling. Check the Dept of Agriculture in your state and with the Heatlh Dept on Safe Food Handling procedures. Good Luck.

tomboy is correct - And it usually has to be made in a stainless steel professional HEALTH inspected kitchen. Some larger cities RENT TIME in their HEALTH inspected kitchens for just this purpose. It's a little expensive to get set up for one product.

This ebay help page should help

top left corner of your screen click HELP, then help topic and put in
prohibited+items in the search box - Click on the Prohibited and Restricted Items - Overview (should be the first one) and then scroll down to the Prohibited and Restricted Items List: and click food (or use the link below if links are allowed here

Virtually all states require food manufacturers and sellers to register with or obtain a license from the state.

sellers may not list the following food and food-related items on eBay: among other things....Fruit and vegetable juice products that have not been heat pasteurized

* Perishable items: Sellers who list perishable items should clearly identify in the item description the steps that they will take to ensure that the goods are delivered to the buyer safely. For example, sellers of perishable goods should offer overnight delivery and ensure that the goods are properly packaged.
* Sealed Containers: All food and related products sold on eBay should be packaged or sealed to ensure that the buyer can identify evidence of possible tampering.
* Expiration dates: All items must be delivered to buyers prior to a clearly marked expiration or "use by" date.

There are many federal and state laws that sellers must comply with when selling food on eBay. Some examples are:

* Ingredients: There are federal and state laws that require labels to state, among other things, the food's ingredients, nutrition information, and place of manufacture.

um are we allowed to put outside links here ? this is a government website and safe www (dot here) fsis (dot here) usda (dot here) gov is the food safety and Inspection Service

Hi. I saw a similar post at one of the Discussion Boards, wondering if was yours. Haven't sold food, but wondering if the jars would be too heavy for shipping cost. Like cookies are so much lighter and those are selling on eBay, but something heavier might be a hard sell. Good luck in your efforts, would be nice to hear how you're doing. Peace. Twang.
