I just bought 2 weeks ago a 1981 Ford F-150 and I am trying to find pictures to help restore this truck. I have already replaced the radaitor, power steering pump, lower radiaitor hose, brake lines, sun visiors, gear box, head light switch, differental vaulve. I almost have in parts the same price as what I have spent to buy the truck. If anyone has pictures of this year of truck send me the link please this would help me in knowing what the emblems, & interior look like. With me being up here in Michigan, it is hard for me to find the older Ford's like what I have so I been turning to the auctions on here for pictures, as well as parts. I just won the hood emblems, as well as the door panels.
Thanks, I have been searching Google, Ask, and even Dogpile, as well as a few Ford forums with little luck. I know mine won't be 100% but I want to get it some what close. I just bought the emblems of the F-150 and Cutom from a seller in California, and the hood letters from another seller in Texas. So I got 3 things that if I would have bought them out of the catalog I have it would have been $30 for each hood letter, $50 for the F-150 and $60 on the Custom so I am saving a few bucks. I am comparing prices of some items off of here, Jc Whintey, and LMC and so far I am getting better deals on here. :) There are a few items that none of the auctions or even books have, like the seat belt covers. I'm hoping maybe, possiblity, running into a 81 at the junk yard this weekend. I only hate it cause it is hard to find a old Ford here in a Michigan junkyard, here's hoping.
Yeah Amanda the best parts trucks are found in the desert states no corrosion. Are you sure you want to restore totally stock? There is a lot of newer stuff out there, that does the same thing. Really hard to get stuff can be found in the Granger catalogue. But it wont be stock. I wish I had the photo's you need hon. Good luck Ms. Traci
I not going all orginal I mean the truck has a 88's grille on it and it's busted up but I like that grille over the orginal. If it wasn't for the 2 screws holding it together it would have come off a long time ago. I'm going to change the bezel around the radio with a little painy on it and put up the Ford emblems I got from a Pinto where it use to read XLT. I got the dip stick from a old Pinto my grandpa had in his field & I still have to cut it down a little. I'm thinking if I can get them off the another old Ford he has is the kick plates. I'm trying to see if I can get a steering wheel mounting kit since I'm replacing the busted stock wheel w/my dad's old wood one from his 72 chevy truck. I'm curtaily repainting the saddle & brown dash w/ gloss black and flat black. I am also changing the dash as well since mine had the speaker wire cut for the top speaker under the dash and won't come out I'm filling in the hole and making it into a solid dash. I already am changing out the mirrors with a somewhat newer style then what I had. I even have a new 07 Ford truck mirror on the windsheild as well as the sunvisiors off that truck. I don't have the stock license plate lights any more traded them in for ones the same Ford truck. The truck came with a cd player but I'm going to replace it since there is a short in it somewhere. Only thing that I think is funny is my dad wants to put a cb in it since has like 3 and think's that'd be different on it. : ) One thing that is still suprising me is I am learning how to spot the older fords as well as which part can work on mine.
What is the Granger catalogue & where can I find it?
Thanks Ms. Traci for alot of the advise, trust me I want to get as many parts as I can out of desert states, and not around here. How long did it take you to put together your 71?
Oh about the 37 years I've had it...giggle. For Grainger info: there are over 324 branches nationwide, toll free number to order parts 1-800-323-0620. Grainger is a super resource for well EVERYTHING !!! Hope this helps hon. :o) Ms. Traci
Thanks Ms. Traci I'll call tommorrow and see if they have a catalog or if I have to order off the phone. Been calling around to the local yards and a few off in the distance so far no luck on the seat belt covers. I just can't believe how hard it is to find a simple piece of plastic. On here I can find me head light trim for both lights, grille, upper & lower molding for the grille, and a front bumper. That'll be my next step after I get the dash and inside door panels, locks, all done next week (here's hoping). I'm taking it one project at a time and I been telling everyone that it's my big model truck I building. I'm just happy today I have all the emblems I ordered off of here so now I'm trying to find me some Dupli-color paint in the can to match my truck now, so I can touch up the hood for now.
Actually all it is is a piece of plastic that is covering up the belt. The seat belts are fine and this piece does nothing to stop the belt at all just a cosmetic piece is all. If you want safety I took out the radio the old owner had in it cause the it was having problems. My dad got looking and there was a live wire that was never tapped up or anything just there. He took a newer cd player and plug re did all the wires and now everything is safer and all the wires that were hanging down and seen are now hide. I got scared when I seen that wire and had it pop when I was moving it. I still have to re wire the engine since the way everything was wired they were conected with electric plugs for your house and not boat connectors so I have to fix all of them arounf the engine.
Ok Amanda....My advise is to rewire the entire truck. Use an AWE wire gauge that is larger than what you replace. Wire into a easy to get get central fuse box. McDaniels crimpers with metal splices are the best if you cover the splices with 2 layers of heat-shrink at the connection. :o) Ms. Traci
Actaully been checking the wiring only thing they messed up was the radio wiring they did, and some of the wire's on the battery. So far everything is still solid and never been touched. On another note got 11 gallons put into it yesterday and later on smelled gas and I have to get a new tank. The old one has a leak around the middle seam, but I took out 6 gallons and it's not leaking now. There's another new part thought I was over spending close to 100 on parts, so more fun is going to be on the way.
