OH lavender is on my top 3 of plants I must have! I bought 4 last year (provence Lavender) and put them in pots but I used HYPONEX potting soil and sand. I did it 50/50 and mine grew great! They took up the pot in there first year I had them where they got morning sun and afternoon sun but they were in shade durning the hot part of the day. When fall came I put 2 in the ground by my pond and coverd them with straw and they are twice as big this year! One of them has 12" long stems on it getting ready to bloom. The other 2 I left in pots did not make it but I sort of forgot about them so. I only gave mine water once a day and that was in the morning around 10 or so. They love Hot, Humid weather and dont like alot of water. I fed mine twice a week with plant food and they are great! Dont give up on them. I tryed for 3 years befor I found what works for me here in zone 5-6
I tried for years to grow lavender here in Okla but it always ended up dying. I love it so much and just kept trying. I like the idea of the sand, someone mentioned that to me before. Mine is in full sun most of the day in a dry spot that isn't watered too much and planted with some gravel/rocks in the hole. Seems to work. We've got a garden tour this Sat. here in Tulsa and vendors set up at each house & I'm hoping to pick up some more lavender and try it out back in a garden bed that gets lots of sun, I may try adding some sand this time. Don't give up on the lavender!
Lavender plants really do like a lot of sun and dry roots. Once the roots get water-logged, the plant will most likely be a goner. I have found they do best in poor soil and thrive on neglect. Also, lavender really is at it's best in the first three years of it's life.
I just planted some here in NC and it dried up in about a week as well. I think after reading these posts, that I must have watered it too much. I have another lavender that came back from last year, but it's not too pretty, not in the sun all day, but it did survive. I guess I will keep trying too...let me know if you receive any more great advice.
I don't know where you live, but I live in the Deep South and have discovered that lavender does not like our humidity! I finally gave up on growing it.
It is true that the roots must breathe for the plant to thrive. Organic food is the best also, it is less apt to burn the roots.A natural ceder mulch is good in pots and outside to keep the top of the soil an even temp.I have found that helps too.
I had lavender in a pot surrounded by broken egg shells. The sand is not only dirt, but it reflects light (lavender loves light.) Mine got taller and taller, and then when it got way too leggy I repotted it deeper. That worked well. I have not had any since Katrina, since I now live with a sister who keeps chickens and they EAT IT! (the things eat anything, including wormwood and live snakes.) Try other lavender types, and also pretenders to the throne like lavender cotton and lavender mint. They are fun too.
