I've been researching eBay & online pricing of the Garmin nuvi 880. I found a $419 +$14.95 S&H at large online camera distributor. The price actually changed to $549 while item was in "shopping cart" I called their 800 number and was conclude the online purchase at that price and they would adjust the price actually charged to my card to $429. In that phone discussion, I also learned this unit required a $169 North America map. It became obvious to me this was a scam and I instantly cancelled the order. Does anyone know for certain if eBay and online sellers are buying foreign wholesale Garmin units to get better pricing for selling cheap but leaving the dumb North American buyer to discover he'll have to unexpectedly spend and least another $99 to acquire the necessary North American Map?
SCAM FOLLOW-UP RE: LOW ONLINE PRICE OF GARMIN NUVI 880
It appears the central point of this scam is actually the optional purchase of an SD Card (not the initial included maps).. When you complete your online order with a large New York located seller, you fast learn that a SINGLE SELLER USES MANY DIFFERENT ONLINE WEBSITES and company names. The routine is that your order confirmation email REQUIRES you to call and confirm something (i..e. the CCV number on your credit card). During that call a sales agent will apply SEVERE HARD SELL TECHNIQUES to get you to purchase an SD Memoory Card containing pre-paid subscriptions to Map, Travel Alerts and Software updates. They say this is a $299 value for which you only pay $199. Best answer is "Not at this time, because I intend to make many future purchases here but first need to determine the timely delivery and quality of the overall transaction experience."
