I am moving to the city where the street signs are either twisted in all different directions(vandalism & to throw people off), and other streets have no signs at all. There are many streets in close proximity to each other, and as I am driving along I would like to have a device that announces the streets, (even when you're not on a set route anywhere) but something along the lines of approaching Pine St., crossing Whalley Ave., etc. If you could please let me know what device you feel is appropriate for my needs, I thankyou for your time. By the way I currently have a Garmin 330 which is better than nothing & eventually gets me to an address in this city, (New Haven, CT) but many times it will try to direct me down one way streets, tell me to turn onto a street where there is none, and does not verbally announce where it is trying to take me other than turn left, right in .2 miles etc. Also these streets have been established in this city for many, many years so it is not as if they are new and it just hasn't been programmed into the system yet.
You need a GPS that has a text-to-speech feature. I have a Garmin StreetPilot c580 and it does that. Also, in case you don't have a route set it shows you the name of the next cross street (it doesn't say it though). Most of the late models of the GPS devices have text-to-speech, so it shouldn't be hard to find one.
