Whats with the rip-off prices of Refurbs?

As the topic states, 90% of the ebay listings for most of these garmin models (660 specifically) are complete rip-off schemes.

They barely state refurb (or use other wording) and charge you nearly full price that it costs to buy it on amazon.com

I'm just thrown off that this behavior is accepted and the sad fact that people are suckers and buy into it.

Ebay prices on these gps units sure seem to be slow with the cost of them from standard online stores. Amazon, Frys, Outpost, etc

Refurb items costing as much as new, and new costing nearly 80-100$+ than anywhere else.

Just making this topic so that hopefully someone who is about to buy one, researches and does not get ripped off.
Useful Funny
Thanks for the heads up.

I think common sense should rule here. Don't accept someone's "Manufacturer's site" listing of features, etc. Make them tell you about the "specific" unit you are about to bid on. And if their explanation sounds weak, then for God's sake.... DON"T BID!! Remember "caveat emptor" "Let the BUYER beware!!"

Actually I almost blew this off as just some mad ranting, but. . . I went to look at amazon, and sure enough--some pretty good deals out there.

Make sure your check your source on Amazon. There are quite a few refurbs there too!! And don t use buy it now, if your looking for a deal. Lots 0f 99 cent no reserve auctions out here. And the bidders set the price. If you paid to much for a refurb of anykind here on Ebay. You got in to big a hurry to buy.

I'm with d0nsm1th, ask questions and READ all details on what they are selling and if you feel it's too good...Straight out ask the seller if they're referb?. If not don't bid.
I have a GPS garmin and I LUV it...Paid the Full price for it and it's the greatest thing you can own. It gives Map Quest a good kick in the rear lol.
Well it is nice to see you have helped other too before they purchase their gps. Happy Holidays to all.

Refurbished items can be a good buy! But the sellar should not be passing these off as "new" units. If you were mislead or the sellar did not disclose that the unit was refurbished, by all means do not be afraid to dispute the transaction through ebay or Paypal! You can either get your money back or at least a discount for having the refurbished unit.

All Garmin buyers on E Bay should take notice of Garmin's statement (on their web site) that ANY E Bay (Garmin) item DOES NOT HAVE ANY WARRANTY. For example, a BRAND NEW Garmin 760 from Amazon is now less than $200.00 with a full guarantee and the latest maps. Many of the "remanufactured" units come up as "previously registered" with Garmin, making warranty registration and updates not available on top of their policy about E Bay purchases. This "no warranty" on E Bay items is quite common with most manufacturers.

I'm not 100% sure on Garmin's warranty policy, but it is the auction type listings that most manufacturers don't support for warranties. If it was a fixed price sale, and not "Auction", then they support the product.

The Following is from Garmin's site:

Question: Can I purchase Garmin Mobile PC from eBay?
Answer:

Our online auction purchase policy is as follows:

Online Auction Purchases: Products sold through online auctions are not eligible for rebates or other special offers from Garmin. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification. To obtain warranty service, an original or copy of the sales receipt from the original retailer is required. Garmin will not replace missing components from any package purchased through an online auction. PLEASE NOTE: If purchased from an online store on eBay our normal warranty applies.

As it states, "Auction" style listings are not covered. However the store purchases are. I take this to include fix priced listing also, but to be sure I'm submitting an inquiry to Garmin.
