I believe the most well-known finger pickers are Roy Clark and Buck Owens, two guitar super-heroes that are very well read in music style. I've seen Roy Clark play loose, tight, even saw him play Beethoven on Violin. But his 'pickin' n' grinnin' is what put him on the map.
The best I ever saw live was Roy Bookbinder. I did see Jerry Reed but it was at a large festival and I couldn't get close enough to see much. There are a bunch of guys on those Homespun video series that are way good but not real popular. Buster B Jones was one I remember the most. Then you have JT who is very popular. I learned a bunch of songs around the time Claptons Unplugged came out but it turns out nobody else wanted to hear that stuff so I learned to play electric.
Here's one for you. See if you know him. If not, you should go online and find some of his music and without a doubt you will be amazed at his finger picking style. The person I am speaking about is Laurance Jubar. I don't know if I spelled his first name correctly. Finger picking guitar is all he does. No vocals, no backing music, just finger picking guitar. Give him a listen. I never knew a guitar could be played the way he plays it.
