I have the worst Tuning problem in the world! First of all I cant play a guitar unless it is in perfect or close to, Tuning. This would not be that big of an issue if I Liked using Tuners, not that they are bad or hard to use but I just dont like to stop and take the time to get the Tuner unplug the guitar and Properly Tune it. So I end up Relative Tuning by ear during a track Im trying to jam over and it usually does not turn out so well for the people around me cause listening to somone tune in the middle of a good track is Horrible , ohh well they will get over it! At least my guitar is in tune for the next song (I HOPE?) HA ha ha Thanks for listening!
Lefwich why not use a Tuner you can leave in-line when not in use? -or- you could get one of those models that clamp to your guitar Headstock and pick up on the vibration? it's okay to want proper tune but if you do not have hardcore 'perfect pitch' stick to using a cheater. in time you will develop the ear and be able to tune dead-on without devices. you also may want to have your guitar checked by a pro, to make certain the Neck is correct and proper.
OCD TUNING COMPULSION REPLY: Likely relates to your psche in general remember that nothing human's do is perfect .THere may be some things you can do to insure the tuning issue is diminished playing out or recording. 1. Make sure your strings are fresh but not too fresh I find that third day is optimum if locked in well and sstretched and tuned each morning& night(strings like all things have memory they will return to the proper place given the chance) 2. TUNERS, yes there is a difference in performance. Unless your a whammy dive bomber I'm not a fan of locking tuners. 3. my ultimat tuner is steinbergers gearless ratio 40/1 and I use them on any guitar I can. Techs, hate them but once you install and familiarize they are a dream. I too l had excessive tuning problems and certainly not the best ear. I had to face the reality that much of it was not OCD but more AAC ( approach avoid-ance complex) yes, Confidence in my work, performance . material etc. I now know that all performance even the greatest error on stage & in the studio it's no big deal you just move past it, have fun, put the time and know that you have the best gear and done your best kick the compulsion of the truck. 4. strings, choice of and maintenace of course is a factor. Play on, enjoy it . Yes it is work but more importantly its a passion as love so have fun. Hope this helps Rev. Marvin Player.
