I recall in a discussion earlier about packing for trips, some forum members posting that they include a handgun in their gear. Assuming that they were not kidding, do bikers face unusual situations where extra "protection" comes in handy? Do you have any personal experiences you would like to share?
PS: I am not a gun control advocate, a member of the NRA or an ATF employee. Just trying to learn.
It is usually more trouble than it's worth. I have shot handguns for years and own several, but don't ever take one with me on my bike. Especially if you are traveling. Different states have different laws for guns in vehicles and you could get in a lot of trouble if 'they' find out you have one. If you do decide to carry, and if you do get stopped, be sure to tell the cop you have it. Especially if you keep it in the same bag as your registration/bike paperwork and he wants to see all that. Tell him before you even go there that it's in there. (Same applies to your sled.) You might get in trouble for having it, but it is better to let him know it's there and avoid him seeing it while you are digging around and 'panic', if you know what I mean.
Just toolin' around locally I usually do not include my pistol. But, when I go on extended trips and out of State, I carry. Keep it on top of all my 'stuff' in one of my saddle bags. I sometimes end-up in some pretty desolate areas in seeking 'a path less traveled.' And you never know what kind-of scumbag(s) you may encounter out there that take a liking to your bike; and would want to knock you in the head in order to take it. Have checked into Conceal/Carry but none of the 'local instructors' have found the time to return my calls . . . Oh Well . . . Se la Vi'.
Well... like the ole saying goes Colt .45, Don't leave home without it. About the only heat I pack these days is Ben Gay and sometimes a sock I stick in my underwear to make it look like I have a big un. giggle :o) Ms,. Traci
poohcraigy, check your local/state laws. Some states don't require you have a cc permit if you have a firearm in your vehicle. And keep in mind that they aren't transferable from state to state. States firearms laws WIDELY vary. Speaking from experience!
I carry! There are dangers out there that have nothing to do with people I have been attacked by dogs mostly and a few other of natures more agressive beasts. I pray that I never need to use my firearm to defend myself from another person but if I ever do I will be very glad to have had it. As far as the cell phone is concerned a cop may only be minutes away when seconds matter. As for the carry permit I live in the west where it is still mostly believed that a person has the right and the responsiblity to portect themselves. I do have a permit but on the rare occasion that I end up in a state where you are more likely to be a victim I put the firearm away in an acceptabe storage format for the area. For the most part I simply go places where you have the right to protect yourself and let the other places be. No one shoud be forced to be a victim be cause of political beliefs. Just for the record I am a veteran, a member of the NRA, on the board of directors for our local shoting range, and a member of a muzzle loading club I shot and hunt.as offten as I can. God Bless America and it's protectors.
Gonna climb out on a limb here, but I do believe that 46 states have Shall Issue CCW laws and many are reciprocal. Only backward places like Wisconsin think gun owners are bad guys. Even if you do have a permit and are in a reciprocal state, I agree that you should let the officer know if you are stopped that you have it Most states allow for transporting an unloaded and cased firearm in a vehicle, they are a liittle hazy about how close to my combat elite the magazine has to be before they consider it loaded. Have a friend who is a retired police captain who always believed that as long as there was not a round in the throat and the clip wasn't home it was unloaded. Oh yeah, carry the Elite on long trips and a Colt 380 Mustang for short stuff. An armed society is a polite society
I carry and am licensed to do so. When traveling out of state I make sure to check carry laws in the areas into which I will be traveling to.a number of the states that have conceal carry permits honor other states carry permits but not all. Ride Free! Ride Safe!
