Actually... rap was nothing more than a media manufactured term for hip hop. They didnt really care to know anything about it in the beginning so they insultively referred to it as rap or rapping, which really only means talking... unfortunatley the name stuck. People have always tried to argue the terms but really they are one in the same despite what undergrounders and their fans wish.
808!! ahh yeah! I remember all that Techno-Hop. Hashim, World Class Wreckin Cru, Newcleus...HIp-hop is the culture, I used to reserve the name "hip hop" for all East Coast Rap, and the DOwn SOuth and West Coast was only "rap". NOw it's blown up so big....it's all HIP HOP CULTURE
I think that electro,booty music IS a big part of Hip Hop's beginning All that stuff helped the culture evolve musically in the same way as breakbeats.
RAP is the Made Up Commercial Representation of HIP HOP culture which reflects many subcultures . . .
Crunk(Lil Jon,Etc) Screw(DJ Screw,Lil Flip) New York Classic Style(Pete Rock,Tribe Called Quest West Coast (DJ Quik,Dr Dre) many more . . And all of these have subcultures within them.

Rap is something that you do, talk, a pimp raps to his hoes, I rapped to my homie last night about the game etc. Hip Hop is more than that, it's a way of life that includes music, art, dance, even the way you wear your clothes. I't is a mind set. Hip Hop artists create new styles. Rap is just talk.
