I bought an Onkyo theater system Model HTR510 all in one box because I'm not good with electronics. A few months after installation, the receiver began to cut itself off and on ad weird times. I checked some message boards and found that many people had the same problem with that model. So now I'm trying to buy a new receiver for the system and want to know if I can replace my receiver from the 6.1 system with a receiver from a 7.1 system? Or even from a 5.1 system? If I do, what will I lose from the system? Any electronics buffs with helpful information would be a big help! Thanks!
If your receiver is cutting on and off, I would check either my wiring or my speakers first. Usually when you have problems like that, you may have just one wire slightly shorting out causing this problem. If your wiring is good, check your speakers. Now, if you are not sure how to do that, try this little trick. While the stereo is playing at a moderate volume level, (not cranking super loud to make your ears bleed), remove the speaker grill if possible, push on the actual speaker cone and see if the system shuts down. If it does, you have an issue with that speaker and not the receiver. What you just did was alter the reactive impedance of the speaker to a level not typical for that speaker and the receiver reacted by shutting off which is called protection mode. If neither of those seem to shed light on the problem, check if the receiver is getting real hot or not getting proper air circulation to cool off. If its real hot, make sure the top of the receiver is not covered or something heavy is stacked on top of it. If there is a shelf directly above the receiver, remove or readjust the position of that shelf so that the receiver can get some air to circulate and help cool it off. One more note. Most all in one systems are not designed to be run full tilt and banging loud. A few exceptions would be brands like Yamaha, Denon, or any company who uses speakers from a major speaker manufacturer and a receiver from a major home audio company. Many retailers like Best Buys and Circuit City actually sell combined speaker and receiver packages that are not bad at all. I have worked with Onkyo myself and owned one for a short time and was quite impressed with its performance. I would blame wiring or the speakers as your problem unless this receiver is actually a POS. Good Luck...
One more note of information. If the current system is a 5.1 system, you can use whatever receiver you like from 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1. If all you have are 5 satellite speakers and a powered subwoofer, it will not make a difference. If you speaker system is 6.1, make sure the 7.1 receiver can work in a 6.1 application. Just about all of them to my knowledge will with no problem. You will have to make necessary set up adjustments to make sure it is working properly. I know, that means reading the manual and going through the steps. Well, its your money. It makes sense to get your moneys worth out of your system. If not, pony up and pay an expert to set it up for you. Here again, its your money whether you spend more or save more too. Good luck....
