I will be homeschooling my son (Kindergarten) this year. There is so much conflicting information about curriculums that I dont know where to start. I am leaning towards Abeka at this point. Any input would be appreciated.
Abeka has nice reading books with q and a at the end of each little story. I ordered 3 books for 4th grade reading last year on ebay and it's worked in well for our language arts curriculum. For math we use books we order online through walmart and or sam's club. www.schoolspecialtypublishing.com As time goes on you'll see what works and what doesn't since each homeschooling schedule, environment and child are unique
I started homeschooling all 3 of my kids last year b/c with the class sizes being so big I did not feel they were learning the material they needed to know. My youngest son is in Kindergarten this year and I am using the books you get at Staples (or any office supply store) and also Wal-Mart. There are also alot of educational games on the internet, ie www.pbs.org, nickjr.com, and also a zoodles.com (which is full of activities just for the age you set up when you download the program). Just remember to make it fun. As he is learning his letters do an even that day for the letter. For example, the letter "F", you could have a funny feet day and use finger paint and paint everyones feet. For Science you can go around with a notebook and collect the leaves that are changing colors and also take a crayon and put the paper on the tree trunk and use the crayon to color get the different textures of the trees. Kindergarten is a fun year so remember to keep it that way. If you need any help my email address is pguy@indy.rr.com. Feel free to email me.
My wife and I have homeschooled our three children since the first grade. We have at times used the Abeka, the Saxon, and other curriculums. Abeka usually has a book buying show where you can preview thier material before you purchase. If you go to thier web site they have a link to find display meetings in your area. My wife and I have found that all the magor name curriculums are very usable, of couse the important thing is purchasing the answer key. There are many wonderful used curriculums for sale on Ebay. My wife just sold some of ours which the children have out grown. I strongly suggest that you sign up for Home School League Defence Association, hslda.org. It is a watch group dedicated to protecting our rights as parents. I hope you find this info helpful.
Me and my family use the Alpha and Omega company's curriculum and it seems to work great for us. Right now we are using materials from the "Horizons" category.
It is not the hardest curriculum I have seen but it is not the easiest either, just enough to keep them challenged without burning them out.
