Hubby and i looked at a cottage to rent as we search to buy a house... It was on a horse farm in Upper Freehold Twp, NJ...
The owner told us all about people killing their own horses an hour above Philadelphia cause they can't feed, sell or give them away!
This was shocking for me to hear! There has to be help for helpless horses!
Is this going on near you? Where are horses with these scenarios at?
Horse prices from my days have jumped up! She named how hay and grain has shot up too! Boarding rents are high now as well... By us it's $400 plus for full board.... Turnout and filler in feed was used in my day...
Any ideas for rescues, etc... for these horses?
I hope those horses get help soon.... Christie Hubby and i are looking for decent trail horses... We wanted to get a house first...
I would suggest the owners contacting a local horse association. FreeCycle is a great suggestion too (where people give things away to others who want what they are giving) I have always wanted my own horse and will have sometime soon. I wish I could afford to drive up there and adopt one. There are other alternatives, if these people really want to look...Google IT!!!! There are many organizations that would help these animals.
Horses a cheap at sales but normal prices from indiviuals here. Hay was high last summer because of drought. It will probably stay high with fuel up but hopefully we will get rain.It being scarce was almost worse than price as we have a cow/calf. There was hay stolen from a barn last wk in mid-day and it was for a special horse. Folks helped the lady. Good luck in your search. Riding has become our retirement activity and we can go places close to home.
I am interested in your post. We are currently looking for horses. I would be more than happy to pick up a horse rather than see it slaughtered. If you can give me some info on how to contact these people that would be great.
This is so very sad! There are many therapeutic ranches in the country that take horses for special needs children to ride. The children gain substantially and donations help the facilities provide more services. One such facility I am aware of is Running WJ Ranch near Texarkana, Texas.
If this isn't viable, surely there are big-time ranchers who would welcome a free horse!
horses unless they have a lot of training under them are very cheep now. race horses are being bred constantly and unless they are in the money at age 2 get tossed aside. with no packing plants in the US animals go to mexico or canada for slaughter. feed is up and i know from experiance vet bills can go though the roof. some people near me shot 2 of their horses last month. its like so many animal situations. people think having them is cool without knowing about all that is involved with the care needed. and then its the animal that suffers.
I am at a loss for additional info on contact info to the areas where this is happening... I would suggest calling the SPCA or shelters in PA for info...
The racing associations usually will refer you to retired horses needing homes...
Breeding farms - They may give or sell you the defective foals after you sign stating never to reveal the parent or farm info...
Houston SPCA gets numerous horses in needing homes... Director Jim Boller knows about them....
Tack shops, horse farms, horse auctions, vets, farriers, grain mills, etc... sources may also know where horses needing homes are....
Note: I was hoping someone else knew about the PA dilemma of these helpless horses...
There are a lot of horse rescues, but it takes a team effort as some don't go all the way to 'rescue', spca has links and as backwards as the animal rights are down here in Louisiana (i am from Canada, wooah, like night and day, heaven and hell, etc..) and i was actually surprised to see the rescues around here... A THERAPEUTIC riding centre is a fab idea. you call, you call, you call the NEWS, knowing this is like in human terms being almost an accomplice as you know, and i feel terrible that your hands are tied. Where exactly is this going on, i have no problem getting this out, as we all should, it is our duty to these gracious animals who strive to serve humans and DEPEND on us to be their advocate... I am sounding a bit self righteous and don't be afraid to respond, i just get madder as i think about this. I pay well over $480 a month down here for two paints, have been ill, and they need a wonderful home. if anyone thinks about selling a horse for less than $800, well then you can just assume they will go for meat , always check the going rate/price for horse meat, a seemingly nice person will buy them up and export them, and get a great comission. Good luck, and i mean it, even if you are afraid, anyone can create over 4 ebay usernames, extra emails, web based, trust me, if you are afraid there are ways. be bold, or tell someone who will. i will look into this if you like. another fab resource if foaltrain.com aka tugonyrheart they save PMU mares/foals and ship/receive from even Canada---Amy at FoalTrain i am sure would not put this request down until she found a resource... Good luck, it is all of our obligations to speak for those and protect those who serve us and depend on us for mere survival and decency. Christina K Brinkman Folsom, Louisiana
ALSO many or at least some here, not sure about all of North America, many horse shipping companies may do charity work. heck, the government does somewhat of that to auction their poor captured mustangs
Excellent site for anything to do with horses across the US, not sure if Canada is included... - I spent all day today getting info off it...
www.HorseUtopia.com
A good site for info on many horse things...
Horses for Dummies has a list of actual horse rescues... - I may have time later to key them in a seperate blog...
Update: Hubby and i are renting an apartment on a horse farm... So the horses will be coming way before the house does... * I'll be back in the saddle soon...
i think with the price of fuel this has brought the hay and grain up because it is making it tough on the farmers i pay 4.00 a bale right now and that is cheap. i have bought hay from the same person for years and that helps. and i pay 8.99 per 50 pounds of grain thats high. but to kill a horse no. does not make since to me. i love horses.
How sad and shocking. I adopted a PMU horse and he is a stunning animal. A realitive of mine couldn't keep him so I took him in when he was about a yearling or maybe older, but under two. He was in that funny, funky stage for quite a while and now he looks like a caramel palomino Freesian! Here in So. California I pay over $15.00 a bale and it's over $20.00 a bale depending on the type of hay! The gain I use is $20.00 50lbs there is cheaper at about $10.00. I would never neglect or kill my horses, they are always taken care of at all costs. If ever I am unable to keep them and can't sell them I would contact my local animal shelters or someone such as the Pegasus Foundation and Helen Woodward Animal Center. These kinds of animal associations can direct a concerned person or owner and connect them with the right people and organizations. My sister in law gave her mare away to an association that helped battered and abuse women and children. Her mare atrophed her shoulder and really wasn't safe to ride and unfair to the mare as well. After several vet visits and some physical and electrical therapy she couldn't afford to keep it up and there wasn't much results. She called one of these foundations and they came and got the mare and even let my sister in law tour the ranch and visit when she liked. There is always a way if there is the will. I hope soon we all find economical relief for the sake of people and animals alike! Good luck out there!
I am from Pennsylvania and have heard some pretty nausiating stories that are very similar to the one you describe. It is (sadly) happening everywhere.
That's why, when I began my search for my newest addition, I started with some PA rescue groups, like: www.lastchanceranch.org
You can also find a more comprehensive list at: http://horseworlddata.com/rescue.html
I have learned that there just isn't enough money being donated to such organizations to rescue them all (or even most for that matter). I echo the others who have suggested perhaps ASPCA intervention at this point.
Too...I don't know where in PA you are...but, if you are still looking for a ranch to purchase, I have a dear friend (who breeds appaloosas) who has just decided to sell hers (here in western PA). If you would like additional information, feel free to contact me directly at wendyjokid@yahoo.com .
We have meet people that couldn't afford there horses and we took them so now we are up to eight (one is a donkey). We have only bought 2. I have also seen owners trying up a old horse to die with no food or water. Which is not at all right. With eight large animals and taking in dumped dogs and cats we are now to the point of barely making ends meet but my feed store helps me out alittle. This is one of the reasons I started selling on ebay to feed our animals. Amy
