During 1953-55, I purchased 12 Hummel Figs, Full Bee, in Germany. They have just accumulated dust and more dust. The finish is now matte. How do I clean them? Is plain soap and water safe?

I have about 100 Hummels and I acquired them from a German store owner who purchased them from Germany. He told me to use toothpaste with a childs tooth brush if they are really dirty. Gently brush with small amount tooth paste without brightner. Rinse with warm water, and pat dry with soft cotton cloth. Just found your website; hope this helps. It worked for me. Thanks Charlotte....

the older Hummels have a mat finish to begin with. You can all so spray they with a mild window cleaner. Set them on a soft cloth, spary, let set and use a soft tooh brush to clean the hard to get to spots. Do not dip in water.

Hi
I clean my Hummel figurines with water, mild soap and toot brush and they are fine. So I would say it is safe to clean them that way.

I use a deluted solution of Mr. Clean. 10 parts water to 1 part Mr. Clean. With a spray bottle, wet the Hummel and clean with a childs tooth brush. Run clean water over the Hummel, dry with soft towel then use Q-tips to dry hard to reach areas to prevent water spots. I got a few real dirty one and this worked very well

HI,
I have read in a related post from a person who is a dealer in hummels and belongs to M.I. Hummel Collectors Club.
Do not emerse in water as hummels have an air hole to allow the air to escape while molding or firing. If water is allowed to get inside the hummel it will seep throught the material to the outer finish and this will FADE the colors from the inside out.
Recommeds cleaning with warm water and mild soap with a soft cloth, preferrably lint free.
Also, storing of hummels should not be in a place where temperatures fluctuate, as that will help to create the crazing we see on hummels.
hope this helps,
Kind regards,
jane
