I have a bad feeling about this one....

We dont often come to "blow off steam".....but this whole notion that you HAVE to sell to just anyone gets a little bizarre at times.

We make it well known in our listings that you must have at least a minimum of 5 feedbacks in order to bid on our auctions....basically our years of research has shown that those with 5 or fewer feedbacks have (at least with our auctions) a 91% chance that the transaction will go "south" for one reason or another....Neg Feedback, non payment...etc..etc.. We sort of like new bidders to get their feet wet so-to-speak so they have a little experience in bidding on other items first.

Anyway, we still get the occational new Ebayer that bids and causes problems.....and we basically have no choice but to continue with the transaction. Now, we do make acceptions to the rule, if the new Ebayer contacts us and talks to us about the auction....that we have no problem with.......but its the crackpots that drive us nuts....and it ALWAYS seems to be over a $2 transaction (with FREE priority shipping of course).

Our latest "buyer" is new....buys $4 of loose gemstones (for jewelry...states he is some sort of a manufacturer), then sends a follow up email to us that states the they are a "large wholesale buyer" that just wants a sample of our product (of course its laid out in broken english...but with a US mailing address) and shares that these had better not be FAKE, and then dictates how this transaction is going to go down to us and what we MUST send him. Not to mention the fact that he mentions that he is part of a European Royal family...and is used to making everyday "large purchases"......smells like a rat yet?? Most bizarre thing we have come across to date.......and of course, we have to sell to him.

We have already added them to our "blocked bidder" list.....I just a have a bad feeling about this transaction....anyone care to make a "wager" on its success?

What do you think!!
Useful Funny
Rolexor - no you DON'T have to sell to him

cancel the transaction, refund their money and block him!

I recently ran a bunch of auctions - out of 40, I had 2 NPB's
on one of them, I waited the 7 days - no payment, no communication, and was going to offer a second chance to my next highest bidder -
as is my custom, i always email the non-payer and let them know I am filing a claim with ebay to get my fees back -

this one responds " i am not interested in this ring"

well, you bid on it and you won!
anyway, I made the second chance offer, which was accepted, paid for, and shipped within a couple hours.
Later that evening, I get a paypal payment from the original bidder - now he wants the ring!
too late - i emailed him back - ring has already been sold to someone else, paid for and shipped! refunded his money and blocked him!

This is not a game - sellers incur big fees to list and sell on Ebay
This is part of the reason that I stopped doing auctions until ebay offered free ones - with auctions, there is always a chance the buyer will not pay

doing fixed price listings requiring immediate paypal payment eliminates the non-payers completely.

I'm surprised he didn't have a lot of money he needs to transfer to America and wanted you to help him....for a fee, of course.

I agree with Dale - cancel the transaction and tell him you don't sell Crown Jewels lol.

Yep, that one sure smells rotten. I'd do as Dale and Lorraine suggest...cancel and block - ASAP. You can bet your boots several of us here will be doing an advanced search to see who it was - and BBL here we come.

BTW, if he is such a big-time trader of gems, he'd have the instruments and know-how to spot fakes - he wouldn't need to threaten you or issue ultimatums. Sounds like a hack all the way around.

I swear, you can't make this stuff up!

Its all good advice....But if you block and cancel the transaction....cant they still leave negative FB???

DALEC22...how do I do this without getting neg'd in the process. Do tell...I have never tried it.

If you cancel the transaction through ebay - there is NO transaction for feedback to be left on

it no longer exists once it is cancelled and you get your fvf credit......

well, technically, I guess there IS
as I am typing this, I just received a feedback that says

nice ring

this is the buyer who missed out on this ring by not paying for it. Why they bothered to leave me any feedback is a mystery
If you look several items below that one in my feedback, that person is the one who actually paid for and received this ring

go figure....
I got a positive feedback from a person who never paid for or received that ring.

the strange just gets stranger

Dale -

That is indeed weird that the deadbeat buyer left FB. Even weirder that he COULD. Did you check your DSRs, though? Hopefully he didn't slam you there. There are definitely some glitches in ebay's system - wish they would focus on fixing them.

yes JR - that was the first thing I did - my DSR's are 5's across the board since I received so many positive feedbacks in June

no impact there - i was not dinged

I have no idea why he would do that unless he meant to leave feedback for another seller?

So maybe my original thought is correct - I just realized that I DID NOT cancel this transaction, I simply offered the second chance to the next highest bidder. That is why this one was able to leave feedback.

I do believe that once you cancel it, they cannot leave feedback
I had somebody purchase a pendant 2 days ago, then email me that she could not use paypal, could we cancel? I went through ebay, cancelled the transaction, got my fvf credit, and a cancellation notice from ebay -
THAT transaction is no longer available for feedback so I believe my first statement to be true

Oh, Dale bless you. I had a transaction go South and the buyer was difficult. I did cancel the transaction, so presumably she can't leave me a neg.

Makes me feel better.

Thanks, Dale - that makes sense. And congrats on all those 5's. I'm hanging in there at 3 out of 4 5's...shipping costs still at 4.9 despite free shipping. Go figure. I still say if you offer free shipping, your default should be 5 stars.

Make it a great day,

Hi - no matter what you do, you're likely to have a problem.

To terminate the transaction, go through the resolution center. They have the directions there on canceling a transaction.

Unfortunately, since YOU are defaulting on the transaction, the buyer WILL be able to leave you feedback. That's EXACTLY what happened to me - and it took MONTHS to find the right person in Ebay to get the problem fixed!

Best of luck to you on this one!

Thanks for posting this case. I am new on Ebay. Just getting my feet wet with all the buying and selling. It is good to see what you can do to protect yourself. I appreciate the opportunity to read about it. Even tho I am sorry that these situations do occur!!

Dale,
You CAN leave FB for a transaction that has been cancelled by the seller. I did so for an item that I had ordered and paid for where the seller cancelled the sale because he didn't ship overseas. Usually I mail and ask first even if they say they ship or don't ship as in many cases they will open up the item to me. But this guy didn't have anything in his listing and it was down to the time wire so I figured, what the hay and bought it. The next day I got the nicest email from them explaining and cancelling the sale, they even refunded my total amount plus $2 for my hassle. Later when I went to my summary page it said that I needed to leave FB for the item, so I did.
Maybe it was just a fluke, but I left the guy nice FB, but no stars as I had nothing other than his actions and mail to judge by.
Since reading this thread I got to wonder about it but it doesn't figure.
Things are just getting weirder and weirder around here.

Hello Ewanna!

well, then I guess I have just been lucky - I have cancelled several transactions - some initiated by me, some by the buyer - and I have never had a feedback issue!

I think it depends on your customer service - If everybody stays nice - it should not be an issue

I don't know if it still pertains, but if you go into your item specifics, ie "Mark Item Unpaid", I believe it will cancel out the feedback they would leave you. A tec at Ebay told me this once. Try it and let me know what happens. . .Happy Sales. . .
