I decided to go into jewelry selling. Apparently wrong thing to do :-( It is nice but costume jewelry. Some is from known tv seller, some is from known wholesaler and someis from a nice known wholesale site. It just isn't flying off the shelves like I hoped it would :-( What is it with such slow jewelry sales? I've tried many price ranges, even to the point I list below what I paid, yet no buyers :-( I now have a huge inventory that is going nowhere. I ship jewelry with free organza draw string bag and paper 'jewelry of quality bag' - sell a few jewlelry items - but am not really getting what I actually paid for the item, am losing money on jewelry. What's wrong, anyone have any suggetions if you check my listings??
people are cutting back......gas is $4.00 a gallom....jewelry is not the top priority right now!
rwad some of these posts and read my post Tips for Marketing.....you gotta get noticed for people to find your items in the MILLIONS of jewelry postings on ebay!
First I want to qualify my expertise in giving you advise. I am a costume jewelry wholesaler who sells to ebay sellers as well as store owners for the last 7 years. So I am constantly buying for my ebayers in order to sell them the items I know sells best for them on ebay. The key is in the buying. PRICE AND THE RIGHT MERCHANDISE. Study the marketplace. Look at completed listings and see who is selling very very well. Then notice their starting price and all the details of how they are selling and try to learn and reproduce the business concept as closely as possible. Notice what they are selling. My ebayers are successful sellers.
The 1st thing I notice is that you have a higher starting price. The problem is that this is ebay and you are competing with thousands of other auctions of costume jewelry. At the beginning, until you build a loyal customer base or have something very unique or rare you must start at a very low price. After you have the loyal cusomers you can raise your starting price.
The second problem I see is with your merchandise. Although they look like decent quality pieces. Notice that smaller pieces don't generally sell as well in "costume jewelry". Unless it is something very unique and then your photgraphs have to be highly detailed. Also plain silver is very difficult to take good pictures of .Sometimes I have great silvery pieces and my ebayers will flat out reject it because it will not take a good picture.("too much reflective light) It ends up looking plain and boring in the photo although in person it may be quite beautiful. If you must sell what you have on ebay then take good close up detailed pictures.
In general, anything that looks antique style(victorian or art deco) sells better than contemporary. Colorful, drippy, chunky pieces sell better that simple pieces. Necklaces that are multistrand or with larger pendants do well. Jewelry with Rhinestones on it do better in general. Natural materials such as wood, shell, glass don't sell as well, although if you have something that is very different and unique then it sometimes sell well. In order to be able to sell at a low starting price you have to buy at the right prices. Find great suppliers where you can find deals ie: liquidations, close outs. You must have something that makes you stand out from the crowd. Great starting price or unique beautiful merchandise are a must for any business but if you have both then I believe you can be VERY successful!! Hope this helps. Good luck!

Also if you want to see the type of jewelry that I sell to ebayers you can look on my site. These are BROKEN piece lots which I have just started to sell successfuly on ebay. I soon may start selling non- broken wholesale lots on ebay for sellers like you. In the mean time at least you can see what type of merchandise you may want to start looking for that sells well on ebay.
I feel your pain. I bought jewelry to resell and it has not sold like I thought it would. I even used Dale's idea of buying boxes to include with the items (and they are some super cute boxes!) but even at Intergem this year, I didn't see anything that made me want to part with my money, in either the open or wholesale sections. The jewelry I have bought has been on the internet and it actually seems cheaper than the wholesale at the shows. I bought items I would wear myself, not just name brands or trendy items and they aren't selling like I'd like.
Hi, I am having the same problem. When I first started selling on Ebay several years back, I was making money hand over fist. Now some weeks I make money and others I don't make a dime. I have actually been losing money too. I hate starting items out really low, because i usually end up not making any money and giving the items away and no one likes to bid and find out the reserve is not met. I recently started selling cd's, dvd's and other items in hope that my business will get better. I am disabled and still unable to work full time. I was hoping starting an Ebay store would help out financially. Let's all hope that gas prices will go down and are sells will improve soon! Sorry, i don't think this was very helpful, i just wanted you to know that you are not alone in this!
