Useful Funny
nope!

read this:
Today, items paid with check or money order are 80% more likely to result in an item not received (INR) than those paid with credit card or PayPal. Also, buyers who pay with check or money order are 50% more likely to leave negative feedback than those who pay with electronic methods. So starting in late October, 2008, we are moving to 100% electronic payments - credit cards, ProPay, or PayPal.

This means that sellers will be able to offer credit card payments through their own merchant accounts, and payments through ProPay and/or PayPal, with all payment methods integrated into the checkout process on eBay. Seller will also get paid faster and be able to ship items quicker. And remember, for those buyers and sellers who use PayPal, we're backing every eligible transaction with our buyer and seller protections. (See more information on paperless payments and more on terms for the PayPal Buyer and Seller Protection plans.)

starts LATE OCTOBER

they announced last week that it was not going to be enforced until January 2009:

Paper payments end this October

Beginning late October 2008, all items listed on eBay.com must be paid for using one of the following approved payment options:
Direct credit or debit card payment via a merchant credit card account
PayPal
ProPay
Payment on pick-up
Paper payment methods such as checks and money orders will no longer be accepted on eBay.com.

In January 2009, all of the approved electronic payment methods will be integrated into eBay checkout. For example, if a seller offers credit or debit card as a payment option, buyers will be able to directly enter their credit card information securely in eBay checkout and their payment will be directly routed to the seller's Internet merchant account.

We are also working with other electronic payment providers currently included in our Accepted Payments Policy to integrate their services into eBay checkout in 2009.

By January 2009, all approved electronic payment methods will be integrated into eBay checkout. For example, buyers will be able to enter their credit card number directly into eBay checkout, and the payment will be routed to the seller's Internet merchant account or to their PayPal account.

Ebay held an online webinar and discussion on 9/16 at:
http://workshops.ebay.com/thread.jspa?threadID=130000666&tstart=0&mod=1219772793315

It was asked and answered there:

Q: I have revised 1300+ items to show that I take Paypal only on the payment details area. I use Auctiva and in my listings (item descriptions) mention that I take paypal, check and money orders. Since I have it clearly marked in the payment details that paypal is what I take, do I have to revise/edit 1300 items (one by one) to take the check, money order reference out of the item descriptions?

A: Check and money order acceptance in your item description should be removed by January 15, 2009.

I have never had a problem with checks or money orders. Many buyers will be lost. I have had Paypal for 4 years, however, since all the phishing scams and the fact that my account was infiltrated and every single penny I had in my bank was absconded with, I can see why people do not trust Paypal. I was postively sick when a check for $19.00 bounced when I had $1700.00 in the bank.. I was being honest. The phishing scam said my account was being linked to "terrorist" activity which was against banking laws and cited the rule. I had NOTHING to hide, so I disclosed the info including my mothers maiden name, PIN number, etc. I still get "phishing" emails wanting me to disclose personal information. Many people are too trusting, after being burned by these "phishing" expeditions, eBay may be losing a lot of business for us.
As a small business owner, I should be allowed to make my choices. As someone who pays eBay $500 a month in listing fees, I should be allowed to make personal choices. I have NEVER had a problem with checks or money orders. My main problem has been NEW buyers, who do not pay.

I second Silk!!!
I very seldom even get a request to accept a check or M.O. - I think I've had maybe 5 or 6 in almost 2 years! And that phishing stuff is very worrisome!
But - it's supposedly secure, going through ebay (obviously it's NOT!)
And it's supposed to help protect buyers who don't get what they paid for, and sellers who don't get paid!
I still am not sure about that ProPay - but still thinking about it.

Hi Sophia!
I just popped in to look at a couple of your items, and I see that your listings already state PayPal as the only method.

For all of us ---- That allows a buyer to use a credit card, if they would like, without the extra expense (to the seller) of setting up a Propay acct. I realize it may be necessary, at some point, to use one of the other options that Ebay will make available, but it doesn't look like we need to rush into the Propay line.

At least I won't - just yet.

thanks Sophia!

as I said...works great for me!

Most every other part of life is moving steadily towards paperless payments. I think Ebay and Paypal are just at the head of the pack in this respect.

Checks and money orders are the past -

My hubby and I went to a seminar 3 months ago at our local Wachovia Bank. The banking mamgers there were telling us that in another 3-5 years...banks will no longer even CASH paper checks...their goal right now is to ELIMINATE paper checks and money orders and to go 100% paperless very, very soon!

Those that do not agree are really going to have no choice when the banks all institute these policies!!

Looka at the way we all use debit cards daily in our lives!! I certainly never thought I would let go over writing a check at the store...but I have! I never even carry my checkbook anymore!

it's the wave of the future!

i'm sorry but I see "silk" mentioned here and can you give me the ebay ID? I too believe deeply that eBay is going to keep going trying to stomp out fires that are part of doing business and in so doing, a lot of people are going to drop out because it is just too time consumiing and the rules keep changing. I don't know what Propay is. Originally back in the 90's people were for the most part honest to the point where I'd send the item before the check cleared and never had a problem. eBay was very VERY careful not to get involved in any way between disputes which were rare. I am very disappointed in eBay but curiously drawn to its success. Soon, though it will become a place for higher ends and genuine store goods. It used to help people with little income provide for presents and basics they couldn't afford. I'm selling vintage jewelry at the moment and they were inherited. It seems blasphamus to sell them for pennies when we know the designs are not available any more and the newer designer jewelry is exorbitant! I have made at this moment enough to cover the insertion fees, but goodness know how I'll pay purchased items fees. I guess I'm just not knowledgeable about merchant accounts, designing a website or opening a store. Gosh dang! It used to be so easy but if any of you would like to inform this person who has just about every collectible how to go about maximizing my selling I would be extraordinarily grateful. Of course it doesn't help to live in the farthest East area of Maine. Everything takes twice as long to send.!,,,if the post office is open when I make a stop. Thanks for listening! roses24.

Good evening to you Rose

I as well sale much estate antique and vintage jewelry. the key for me was and is to make money i must spend money to get the most exposure and every day i mean .so here is how i manage my listing.good idea not drop the auction style. After all much of the viewer that brows seller entire listing come from auction style format.in regards fixed price format. Not a good idea to list them all under 30 days. the farther you are in listing the fewer the viewer. What I do is every day i must have auction format listings.then the fixed price should go from 5 days to 7 days to 10 days and 30. this way every week you can have sales.Yes it is tricky but you need to play with numbers and number mean viewers and viewers mean sales.
hope that can help you.
