I'm just getting started knitting and, as other "addictions", I'm starting to collect yarn. Can someone tell me a rule of thumb on how many skeins, hanks etc. is a good number to buy to make sure I have enough for a future project? I'm really only interested in shawls, throws....easy, no brainers, for right now. I'm having chemo and the brain has no cognitive powers to follow much of a pattern, so I'm sticking to quick and easy. thanks, Catherine

Your patterns should tell you how much you will need. If they only supply the yardage, then you will have to check the yarn to see how many yards are in each skein, then divide that into the total yardage listed by your pattern.

Hi Catherine,
I find that there is never enough yarn and to prove my theory I have several very large containers on hand all of the time. But in order to answer your question I have to ask, Do you have the pattern you want to use or the measurement of the anticipated finish project. Sorry to hear your are sick. I will say a prayer for you. Chemo is tough and knitting is theraputic. Hope to hear from you again soon. pat.deen@hotmail.com

I know that a crew or vee-neck sweater with long sleeves takes 10-12 skeins of yarn, depending on your size. There are so many free patterns at freepatterns.com and maybe you can get some ideas of yardage there. It will depend on how many yards are in a skein, say 100. I have only made one very basic shawl that starts with one stitch and is incr every other row. A wonderful beginner's pattern because you just keep increasing every RS row until the shawl is the length and width you want. So simple. And it works with any yarn, from cotton to mohair.
