Opening boxes??

Hello everyone.

I was a pretty hard core player back in the day, especially during the Invasion cycle. I'm not really planning on collecting or playing again anytime soon, but I am seriously thinking about trying my hand at buying/selling MTG cards for some extra income here on eBay.

I don't have a lot of money to get started with, but I'm prepared for hard work. Is it possible to make any kind of profit simply by getting a booster box, opening the packs and selling the rares, foils and uncommons?

I'm not expecting anyone to give up their trade secrets to a newbie and stranger, but any experience and/or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on how many boxes you are planning to buy. Buying one? Doubtful you are going to make any money. I mean if you buy a Future Sight and get a couple Tarmogoyf then it is worth your while! But in general the boxes are only really awesome for a player or collecter.
So imo I would recommend you choose a set, buy a couple boxes from the set, and then sell. If you're only going for one booster box though, it's not going to be worth your time....

Yeah, I'm certainly thinking about certain sets. I would think the highest demand would be whatever the current Type 2 release is. Shadowmoor?

as shadowmoor is the most recent set it may appear that it would be the best choice if your wanting to resell type 2. However, if you compare money rare prices from morningtide to shadowmoor, you will see that there are alot more money cards in morningtide. Which means theoretically if all is equal, a box of morningtide would net you more than a box of shadowmoor.

Thanks mac! I didn't realize that about Morningtide. I'll keep that in mind when it's time to get some boxes. How many I get will quite honestly depend on how much I get off selling stuff around the house. Right now I'm auctioning off some small stuff to get my feedback up before I post my 22" LCD monitor. I'm thinking it'll fetch enough to get more than one box of MTG cards...

Honestly, booster boxes is the worst idea if you plan to make money. If you can get them for about 40-50 bucks you may make some profit but you have to consider ebay/paypal's fees and the junk rares you can't do anything with unless you have a store. The best way is straight up collections. I buy locally and seldom buy collections off ebay for various reasons, it can be profitable if you stay on top of it. If you really plan to be serious with this I would get a phone with e-mail access, this allows you to do a couple of things. Let's say you have an ad on a website, newspaper, etc. and someone e-mails you about selling their collection. You want to be on that as fast as possible, because more than likely there's a few sellers in your area and they'll be getting the same e-mail/phone call. If it has internet access you'll also be able to answer questions and/or ship asap as well as check local websites often to see if any collections have been posted. I know it sounds crazy but I check sale sites about 5-6 times a day just while I'm sitting around and I'm normally the first to contact someone, and ultimately the one to buy the collection.

$40-50 for a box??!! Is that even possible? I thought WotC only discounted boxes to those with brick and mortar stores, and I'm not looking to do that.

I do have net access most of the day, work or home. I guess I could start cruising Craig's List, etc...
