my favorite is shaolin, omei, wudang, wing chun, muay thai, hung gar. the style you saw was from the shaolin disciples not from the actual monks. What they do is wushu, there is very little tradition in their moves compared to the monks 50 years ago. If you find a monk even from 10 years ago, you will see how much more impressive the older monk is. It is still quite spectacular what the monks nowadays can do considering that they only recieve about 3 years of training.
Wushu is a phenominal martial art. It's fast paced, aggresive, and just plain fun to watch.
I love different martial arts for different reasons so it's hard choosing a favorite art. I love Mok Gar and Hung Gar Kung Fu for it's deep history, I love Jiu-Jitsu for it's chess like battles, I love the aerial kicks of TaeKwonDo, and I love the raw power of western boxing. But if I had to just choose one martial art to study I would have to choose...Kenjutsu. In terms of reality it's truely a devestating martial art and in my opinion one of the most lethal around. Sambo and Krav Maga come in a close second and third. Of course this is just my preference...
Theres also a style that the monks used that is called Sil lum pai very good one as well. My instructor teaches that as well as his own style that he founded called lee chuan gung fu which is a combination of sil lum pai, jeet kune do, muay thai and ninjitsu. All very good styles. His Sifu was Dan Inasanto which was one of Bruce Lee's first students here in the states.
My favorite study is of the Philippine Arts & Sciences we call Kali Silat, Eskrima, Escrima, and a dozen or so other names. Why?
Simplicity & Choice. Do what you learn from your friends, not enemies? Of course not all Asians are. The Filipino shares openly to learn more, and thus sharing what you understand and practice more of what you like. Try all the weapons, find what you like, do what you do, sort of taking the alphabet and making words, the Philippine Arts give the stroke of the brush to you! Take the foundation, work and practice what you like. So you practice more? Yes, from the archive of hidden secretes, of Kali Silat of Suryadi Jafri, RIP '98 - Archives of P.
