I drove (in a van, unfortunately) into northeast Virginia, to Colonial Beach--some incredibly good narrow, hilly, twisty, empty biking roads up there. One in particular would sprain a snake's back, from Hwy 301 to Colonial Beach . . . and beautiful scenery.
Also had my dream tour riding every mile of the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway.
Came down from Williams, AZ (Grand Canyon) to Pheonix, Las Cruses . . . some incredible roads/scenery in the copper mining district of NM. Probably anywhere in the Rockies would be good in warm weather.
Hint: At 4,000 feet, it's chilly riding even in the summer.
I'll second the Colorado trip. You absolutely have to ride through the San Juan Mountains in western Colorado. The 80 miles or so from Ouray to Durango is some of the best riding and best scenery I have ever seen or ridden. On the way back take 160 through Wolf Creek Pass, another beautiful stretch of highway.
There is going to be an Iron Butt ride around Lake Mich this spring, Go here for details http://www.bikerornot.com/users/ride.asp&rideID=390 Will I be there? Dont know because I'll be riding from Milw Wi. to Montrose Co. starting the Saturday after, 1300+ miles but then again this would be a great warm up lol Deano
I have been meaning to get to Ohio and tour the southern teir near the Ohio river. I am a big fan of old-time covered bridges. They are especially exciting when veiwed and ridden on a motorcycle.
But for a beautiful fun ride I suggest Pennsylvania route 6 from Ohio border to NY border is exactly 300 miles of the most scenic hills in the country. The hills of West Virginia are really nice too.
You didn't say what kind of rider you are. Some riders ride to see things, most riders ride to be seen. I put the later in the cruiser group. If so you want to pick well populated areas. Like lakes, national scenic routes, and local ice cream stands, or popular watering holes. But please, NEVER drink and ride!
Hi, My favorite run is going for a ride down the Tail Of The Dragon in Carolina. If your looking for a nice curvy road in the mountians on the east coast this is most likely the one to check out. There are not many roads like this on the east cost. Take Care Y'all and Be Safe.
Last summer I took a run from Chicago to Las Vegas then north through Utah to Idaho saw my son for a few days and came home through Deadwood, sd. best ride of my life, I highly recommend it
Forgot to check what size your bike is, but here is a ride for a good cause in August that is open to all riders (min 750cc): http://legion.org/legacyrun/index.php
I did the run to Reno with them last year and have to admit you don't see much riding in a group, but its a great sense of purpose. We had a lot of fun and I'm still in contact with a lot of people.
Looking for one or two riders to ride from Phoenix to DC with. I have about two weeks time to do it after the run and am open for suggestions (Southwest USA/Baja/Mexico or maybe old Route 50 from CA to MD?).
