I am looking for an MP3 player that for the majority of the time will be at home, plugged into a dock wiht speakers...I don't do much listening while I am out. can anyone suggest a good one? I've only seen the ipods that dock into stationary units. can anyone suggest something cheaper but that has excellent sound quality, given that this will be more or less a staionary unit..thanks for any help. rita

Any decent player will work, just not a Chinese knock-off. And then plug it into a decent pair of battery or AC powered speakers. They have to powered since the speakers are so much bigger than ear buds that are normally used with MP3 players. Get good speakers and get a good MP3 player, or you will end up regretting both purchases.

I have purchased several MP3 players. Things to look for are: 1. replaceable litium battery (long battery life or playtime), 2. US manufacturer, 3. removable 1-2 gigabyte (1GB-2GB) memory, 3. flashdrive.
Watch out for players with hard drives (Anything over 8GB memory is probably a hard drive). They break easily. Unless you watch videos, you do not need a color screen. Watch out for batteries that are not replaceable. Rechargeable batteries often do not last as long as advertised. Watch out for foriegn manufacturers. Some are good. Some of the US manufacturers have problems too. Non-removable memory is OK, but removable is really nice.
My favorite is a RCA Pearl (th1101a). It is 1GB, but has a port for additional memory (SD) that can be inserted and removed like CD's only 125 songs at a time. I play it at my desk using Craig model CMA3000 amplified speakers. Two drawbacks for the Pearl. I wish it had a rechargeable lithium battery. It uses AAA batteries that last about 4-6 hours, so I highly recommend using rechargeable batteries. Secondly, I wish it had a clip for when I am listening with headphones. However it is very small and fits easily into a pocket. I will soon be receiving a new MP3 player that incorporates the headphones and is therefore advertised as "wireless". There are also sunglasses that incorporate an MP3 player. Glasses break so easily, I have decided not to buy one of those.
