I'm a left handed singer/songwriter and play both guitar and bass. I've been playing, well, a hell of a long time. I'm interested in hearing from others who are truly left handed, not those who say " yeah but I learned to play right handed." That makes you right handed, if you hadn't noticed. I'm talking to those who struggle to find quality gear or have been blamed because a right hander gets whacked in the head onstage by your guitar or bass neck. Do you notice other issues, problems, and maybe even advantages because you are a southpaw ?
I have a couple of questions : 1) Have you bought/played any of the really cheap brands that are always available on EBay and offer a lot of left handed instruments ? Are they junk, or really great deals ? 2) Have you found or worked with left or right handed teachers that are good with lefties and don't coerce or shame you into playing right handed ?
All humans are born right handed, only the exceptional are able to overcome it. That said, I chose, was not coerced, to play bass right-handed. In the long run, the advantage is I can walk into any music store and find a bass to try or borrow a bass from a friend if needed. Or buy from a huge selection of basses on eBay. You need dexterity with both hands to play bass finger-style so it doesn't hinder you in any way. I do everything else left-handed. 4 of my five basses were purchased on eBay.
That's my 2 cents on the matter. And then there is Paul McCartney.
