Hi, I am a professional freelancer. I have two D100 the last 4 years. I want to up grade because I shoot a lot of sports and D100 is too slow and a slow flash sink. I LOVE the D200 and I am sure the 300 is even better, But I can not afford them right now. Any other suggestions? Diane
Hi, If money is a problem try to find a used Fuji S3 or S5 they use Nikon lens mount and the auto white balance is much better than Nikon under all lighting conditions. I at one time was big on nikon when I was shooting film but got soured on nikons color balance and went to fuji shooting weddings I have a S2 & S3 now and love them.I don't think you will find one much faster. ncs13815n50w@decaturwb.com
Having shot Nikon for over 40 years, I would suggest getting the D200 for any kind of action... the white balance on the D200 is spot on always... just shoot RAW and use the Nikon Capture NX for any minor corrections... the D200 is on sale now and just a great deal for pro work...
I went from a D100 to the D2H, you can find them used from $500 up. You are getting a much better viewfinder, and the famed CAM2000 focusing system, which was designed for action. It is built like a tank, shoots 8 frames per second, focuses very fast, and is a blast to shoot with. If you shoot indoor sports, you'll want the D2Hs, which helps a lot with the noise from low light.
First of all, I'd go with a used D-1H or a D-2H. You are getting a much better camera. The D-1 and D-2 like the D-3 are used by the AP and other major news orginzations. They are built like a tank too. And they are all built on the F4-F5 body. Super easy to hold. The D100/200/300 are hobbyists cameras. Figure a new D1 sold for $4,000.00 new. A D3 will set you back about the same too.
And the reason that you see so many White lenses is that the NFL signed a deal with Canon so that you can ONLY use a Canon camera and have a NFL pass to shoot the games. The NfL will not allow any other camera on the sidelines. I have a friend who is a stringer for UPI and he had to stop shooting NFL games because he was not willing to buy a whole new camera and lens to shoot the games with. So, it's not about quality, it's about who paid the NFL to throw the others off the field. Cough, cough.
I own a d100 and a Fuji s1, I shoot for our local small town paper and have shot football, baseball and rodeo with both cameras, have not noticed them being slow, I have found If I miss a shot it is usually operator error. guess i have just become familiar with them and learned to use them in any situation
The D200 is really down in price now. The D300's are starting to come down as well. You get what you pay for and the D200 is a good value. The D300 is better in low light situations and has a great fps for shooting sports. Save your money and stick with either Nikon, you can't go wrong!
I have an F-5, D300 & D700. All my Nikon AF lens,10 of them, work on the D700 since it supports both DX & FX format. Save your money for the D700 and avoid buying DX VR lens!
Take a look at KenRockwell.com He gives some very good advice on Nikon and other products. In fact you will find the D300 to be out of favor!
From a pro's point of view, I say go for the gold. If money isn't a problem, the D700 (which is what I use) is by far the best buy you could make. However, the D300, and D300s are also great if you don't feel like spending that much (as pro cameras go)
The D300s is the way to go. It's frame rate is brilliant, the sensor is magnificent, and it is overall a godly camera. Personally I use the d700 ,but that's because I shoot portraits, not sports .
