Does anyone have any suggestions for a telephoto lens for a Nikon D-40. Yes I would like the Nikor lens its out my price range looking at Sigma or Tamron. I am looking up 300mm. Any ideas?
The answer depends on what kind of light your subject of choice will have. If you are trying to capture images such action of a hockey game you will need fact glass f2.8. However if you are trying to capture daylight nature you can get by with f4 - f4.5. The cost are vastly different between these two.
Also, you have to be careful that the lense you settle on works with the AF of the D40, I know some do not.
yu will have to keep with the DX lenses, stay with the nikon, ive been throught the gammit of lenses and they are the only lenses i find crisp, clear and will work completely with your D-40, see kenrockwell.com for a lens compatibility chart and he give reviews on the better lenses also.
I am new to photography but from my researching, i just bought the 55-200 AF-S DX VR for my new d40. I can learn whats more important to me later once i figure out what it does or doesnt do personally.
I didnt have a large budget to go after the 300mm but the VR version of the 55-200 at least gave me an upgrade feature with the Vibration Reduction along with the stock 18-55 lens that comes with it. Dont really need a VR version of the 18-55 i suppose.
I agree with donmorgan66 on checking out kenrockwell site. i have learned alot there.
The VR version to the 55-200 lens is only about $20 to $30 more at most resellers. You have to look close tho, i almost bought the non VR not really understanding it.
If you have lots of money then it seems like its about $500 to get the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR.
I read the 18-200 VR version gives alot of range with 1 lens and a better 200 length but its about $700.00
I got tired of trying to find perfect options on lenses, so just went simple plus the VR to learn off of.
I got camera and the 2 lenses for $623.00 at B & H. Best real deal i could find.
Unless you will be shooting wildlife on a regular basis, I would opt for the inexpensive 55-200mm AF-S VR that dealmaker_911 suggested. If you need 300mm you can pick up a cheap non ai lens. Yes, they work on your D40, they just don't auto focus and you have no metering, you have to guess, but your monitor on the back of your camera works to get exposure close.
Actual focal length for the 200mm end is 300mm on your D40, and it retains all lens functions. I don't know of any Tamron lenses that auto focus on your camera, and the Sigma lenses will need to have what they call HSM, Hyper Sonic Motor for focusing. Most of them are no cheaper than Nikon lenses, and some Sigma lenses are of questionable build quality. Your D40 was built without a focus motor in the body, meaning the lens has to contain the motor for focusing.
The 55-200mm VR lens sells for as little as $150 used. Why even consider a third party lens? It is quite sharp, focusing is fast, and VR takes out the camera shake. You can't find that in a third party lens for three times the price.
As for needing "fast glass", simply turn the ISO up to 800 and you negate that argument.
