well the ion is a decent gun but you should prolly tell him to go the extra mile spend a little more and get a new etek they are very good guns and they are made by a excellent company i play d2 and i have a planet eclipse ego 08 and i have a etek for my backup gun just throw a virtue in it and your set.
i would get a proto. Spyders are good and all but they have their downsides and if you get into paintball you will get a new gun in a snap. if you have an ion you will automatically be the noob of the field and everyone will want to light you up.
Protos are only like $50 more and are much more reliable and you will want to stick with them a lot longer.
don't get a VS3 they have air problems i seen them for my self and my vs2 gave me problems 2 just tell your friend to save money and buy a proto but if he can wait to save and buy a etek ego i have one and that thing alone with no ups kicks alot of ass and takes names while looking good =P or a ion ions are okay
Has your friend actually played with either of these markers. If not, then the question is irrelevent. It's all a matter of opinion, as you have seen from the answers given thus far. Your friend needs to fire the markers, maybe even disassemble/reassemble them. Ease of mnx? Upgrades needed? What type of PB is being played? blah, blah, blah.
An ion can be easily upgraded! and are rather affordable. So to anyone whos new but wants something they can upgrade if they want go with an ion. Then if they really get into it you can get something better.
I own 2 Ions 1 freak(stock) and 1 that has been upgraded to kick an egos ass, so it all depends what your friend wants, my opinion, stick with a stock Ion and build it as your skill builds, you'll find that getting familiar with your gun will make you a better player.
