Hi guys, My 69 Barracuda leaks rain in the under dash air boxes. My former 65 did the same thing also. Has anyone ever rainproofed one of these? Thanks, Kurt
I HAVE THE ANSWER!! Figured it out myself- Over years the cowl area gets full of leaves and crap. It eventually rots and cloggs the rain drains. Rain has no place else to go except in your windbox. Simply unclog the drains and problem is solved! Biggest problem was finding the drains- no rubber hose coming out of the firewall like most cars. When hood is raised, look to the inner edge of the area surrounding the hood hinges. There's a half- circle shapped hole. Not the easiest drain to unclog - get creative! Kurt
That little half-circle drain hole? Don't be afraid to enlarge it some - I've seen a couple cars that have added another hole in there. Then take a piece of threaded plumbing pipe - called a 'close nipple' - that will fit your air nozzle and flatten one end enough it'll fit thru the the fresh air grill - use it to help blow debris & standing water (after washing/rinsing/etc) out thru those drains. I used some 1/8" copper tubing and some preformed pieces to make a full-flow 90ยบ end on one end & compression adapters on the other to fit the air nozzle. That works great for keeping that area clean. You could prob'ly just bend the tubing with a bender and adapt that.
Leak's back thanks to Hurricane Faye. drain holes are clear so must be more to it. Back to the drawing board. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Kurt
Ok, Finally did it right! Took the black wind box out from under the dash on the driver side (only 3 nuts). Then I looked up the hole-saw one small hole in the top that seperates cowl water. It was appx the size of a bb. Rust-proofed and repaired it with automotive goop. Afterwards, I felt around and over the edges of the wind hole and found more old decomposed crap compressed in a tight area over the left edge of the wind hole. Had to break it loose with a small screw driver and then get it out as best I could. Very hard to reach in that tight area. Reassembled and... So far, no more water- one of the great mysterys is solved!
