Some people call old school rod "ratrod". Do they even know the difference,is there a difference between the two. What about traditional style rods?? some call them rat rods too. Can anyone put a description one the three style of rods??

Back in the 40's & 50's, hot rods were made to look as nice as possible. todays young rodders are trying to emulate what they think our rods were like from seeing old pics. the big difference is, we wouldn't dare add a rusty old part to our car the way they do nowadays. we wouldn't have used a tractor grill, or rusty old gas tank to our rod because we'd be the laughing stock of our friends. don't get mr wrong, i love rat rods also. the RUST is the big difference between a hot rod and a rat rod. Today, i'm enjoying my 51 merc. Butch Valdez Salinas ca

A rat rod is a style of rod that in most cases imitates (and often exaggerates) the hot rods of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Rats should not be confused with the "traditional" hot rod, which is an accurate re-creation or period-correct restoration of a hot rod from this era. Most rat rods appear "unfinished" (whether they actually are or are not), with just the bare essentials to be driven (function over form) and are often built with what parts one has on hand or is able to salvage from donor cars and junk yard parts. Rat rods are meant to be driven, not trailered.

I agree with roadkill-customs. on the last sentence, I think that is what separates the genre's of Hot Rods. Something your wife or girlfriend wouldn't want to ride even 5 miles in.
