I am thinking about upgrading my bike to the Dura Ace Triple Gruppo. The cheapest i have found on eBay (eBay Express actually) has been $1200. That's out of my budget. Can anyone recommend a comparable gruppo so I can finally do some climbs?

It depends on what you are running now. If you are fascinated by having the top of the line componentry, You have to do DA. But if you are looking for more bang for your dollar, look at higher end FSA, SRAM or Ultegra. Most of the difference between DA and ultegra is only a few grams for each component and the quality is just as good. Another route is to buy pieces(it will probably cost more in the long run) and when you have the whole drivetrain, put it on etc. That is the route I went. Some from EBAY and some from my LBS. I did have a good relationship with the owner and he did cut corners for me, but, it still costs a lot for the Dura Ace logo amd at times it is worth it, but not when you put out huge dollars for it all at once.

just my 2 cents,

Hello Jen, just guessing the sf is for the bay area.So heres an idea, gearings not quite as low but nowhere near as pricey.Put a 12-27 on the rear and a 38 as your small ring.I know most likely were not the same, but the combo works well for me on all the local climbs, even that lovely 17% at the end of diablo.Good news for your wallet, you can do it for as little as 120 bucks,10% of the cost for a new grouppo.Something to think about, enjoy this great fall weather
good luck..........Greg

For good prices on gruppos I would check Probikekit.com. There is a new line from Shimano Ultegra SL which is quite nice. Also i would look at a compact crankset vs. the triple. The compact has smaller gearing and will be lighter than a triple.

Greetings.

Another thing to look at, if you live in NoCal and the hills there are tough, the compact crank is the way to go, and then on your rear gearing , the 11-26 cassette will give you the best of both worlds. I have that set up for a climbing bike, with DA 10, but you can find DA 9 speed brake calipers to save some money also. The 50-11 will give you a good downhill speed gear without topping out the gear, the 34-26 will let you spin easy up those nasty grades, like fillmore st. 27% OUCH. Good luck.
