I have a petoskey stone, 6 inch slab, polished on one side, raw on the other that I have cherished since the early 70's...I have wire wrapped a number of Michigan Agates for freinds and family and want to learn ,more about Michigan rocks and minerals...Lots of fossil in Michigan that is beautiful near Lake Michigan...
There is a new Rock Club forming in the Big Rapids area and meets on the campus of Ferris State in the Geology Lab. If you are near-by, it would be a great group to join.
hi mjv0 I have NEVER collected in Michigan but that hasn't stopped me from researching site info and dreaming of a state-side tour. What I've learned so far are: Petoskey and Charlevoix stones at Petoskey State Park; maybe the beaches of the Keeweenaw Peninsula? for thomsonite and agate, then there is the copper district for those into microminerals, but the A.E. Seaman Museum in Houghton is high on my to-do list; the Mineral Gallery at the Cranbrook Institute of Science; agate at Pictured Rocks Natl Lakeshore and a mention of crystalline celestite at Rockwood. I am probably missing many highlights due to distance but Only Locals Know Best. And all the best to you with your MI quest.
