Currently I buy most of my fabric and other items off line I miss feeling the fabric, but the selection is better and it's like shopping from the Sears catalog.
I get some fabic from ebay, mostly upholstery and quilt fabric. Burksfabric.com is also good for quilting. I'm not sewing clothing anymore so I don't know where to get fine fabrics. There are a couple of places posted here in another thread, one is out of Oregon, and it looks to be pretty good.
It is harder to find decent fabric anymore. It is often cheaper to buy ready made than to make it. I grew up sewing, taught all three of my children to sew, including the boys. My daughter doesn't sew because she says by time she buys the pattern, the fabric and all of the notions it costs her $30.00 for a T-shirt she can buy at Target for $5.00.
I forgot, JoAnn's has a website and you can buy direct from there. I think they will waive or discount shipping if you spend X amount of money. If you want I'll look up the seller I use for quilt material, good quality fabric, nice lady, quick ship, great prices.
It's a shame, the mom and pop stores went out of business and the big retailers don't find it profitable after running them out.
I agree sad to see stores go, I appreciate your help. My husband also agrees cheaper to buy than make. I loved home economics when I was in school and making clothes was enjoyable, something you could proudly to show off. I guess that's why alot of people are selling patterns. I'll continue to buy patterns here on ebay and enjoy myself! Thanks again and best wishes to you.
Hi, I'm watching, but didn't buy any lately. There is alot to chose from, some are expensive, too! Do you still make clothes? Do you enjoy making quilts? Have a nice night. Gail
I don't sew like I use to. I use to make my kids clothes and most of my skirts and such. I loved to sew, I'm sorry I haven't kept it up. I mosly repair now, smile.
I like the quilting. I use to do this more often also. I was glad when I took it back up. I am curently makeing a crazy quilt. I has been a lotof fun. The embroidery has been a challenge as I have not embroidered in close to twenty years. But, that too has been fun, it is freeing when you don't have to follow a deisgn. It i not going as fast I as wantd, to any distractions with famly, but it will get done soon I hope.
I am off work in two more months, I should have time then to sew. I would like to learn tailoring techniques, but I may not be skilled enough.
It's been years since I've made an outfit. I did buy old sewing books with techniques on sewing. I didn't make a quilt yet, maybe someday down the road. I did make pillows when in high school. I'm 33 yrs old, I also enjoy plastic canvas, I do some needle point; just my eyes bother me so can only work an hour at a time. I've made Christmas ornaments out of needle point. Plastic canvas I've made trains for my sons. I also made gifts for family members like tissue box covers and houses.
I use to love to needle point. I always felt regal when I would make something. It was as if I was making a tapestry for my castle. I never used plasic canvas, do you still have the pattern for the train set? I would like to make it for my grandson, I need to know the name so I could find it on line. Using the larger grid would go a lot quicker than the normal needle point. I was also doing petite point, but that is a real eye strain.
I like the quilting. It doesn't go as fast as other needle work. Previous to this quilt, I only made baby quilts. And most of those were appliqued, which goes really fast. I could turn out a finished quilt in a weekend.
Sadly to say most of my sewing for clothing is repairs, I think it is becoming a lost art. Carol
Hi Gals, I have an Ebay store called Shefindsthings at Nostalgia where I sell Trade Only Designer Fabric Samples..also a little bit of yardage. Naturally, most of these samples are small in size. They start about 8" square and go up to about 26" squares. BUT, the fabric is mostly high end and gorgeous. I don't sew, but I am always coordinating fabric selections for people. I really enjoy doing it and you can see that my customers are ALL very happy. Content ranges from 100% Cotton, 100% Silk to all kinds of blends. The fabric weights range from standard sheet or chintz weight to heavy tapestry and delicious velvets. Any questions? I love solving problems. Many of my repeat customers are fabric artisans who make clothing, purses and pillows. I even have a artisan who makes wall hangings and collages. I hope that I can help some of you fabric seekers out there! Take a look! Mention this group and I will offer you 25% off any purchase in my current store that is not on sale or on auction. Sheila

I do hope you find this, I did purchase this on ebay 2 years ago. I don't remember the seller, sorry. Have a nice night. Gail
I have the same problem! We have a Hancock Fabrics, but they have a very limited inventory and never what I need. We also have one Quilt Shop but she is so expensive my credit card screams when I walk through the door. Sooo. I buy most of my fabric on-line. Most often from my favorite Ebay sellers. I also find the Hancocks of Paducah catalog very helpful and do order from them when all else fails! PROBLEM-Touching the fabric, and checking the quality when purchasing on Ebay, I've gotten some really horrible stuff passed off as quilt shop quality fabric! Oh well, what's a girl to do.
