I have been collecting and reading a lot of SK short stories lately. Just curious what everyone else thinks might be his best? My personal favorite has to be The Jaunt.

Anyone else's thoughts?
Useful Funny
Hey everyone, actually one of my faves (there are so many) is Apt Pupil. The one they actually made into a movie about the Nazi officer and the boy.
Scary and compelling.

well, I love them all but I think my favorite is "the 10 O'clock people" and its mostly because I'm a smoker. I also love "Mrs Todds shortcut" and "the Jaunt" which is about teleportation...eerie ending.I have read everything Mr King has written and love alot of the short stories, I find myself fitting scenarios into my life all the time

What about the hard to find stories that were in Magazines and publications
that no one hears about till now...lol. I ask because I am trying to get a list
of where I can find ones like Chattery teeth.

2 good places to find them: http://www.stephen-king.de/zeitschriften/zeitschriftene.html (in German)

Hi All,
I am new to this community and I won't go into a lengthy discussion about how much I enjoy Stephen King. My screen name (which I have been using as long as I can remember) and my license plate holders " I'd Rather Be Reading Stephen King " pretty much sum it up. Now, as to my favorite short story...there are just so many but I have to choose 'The Mist'. I first read it when I picked up a Kirby McCauley 1980 1st edition titled 'Dark Forces' at a garage sale for 50 cents. It was signed by McCauley ...what a find. Of course, I didn't realize what I had at the time so I just came home and started reading. I turned to The Mist first and read it twice in one sittting. I have no idea how many times I've read it since. I got smart and put the signed 1st away with my collectors edition though. But 'Mist" just speaks to me for some reason. I think it is because it is just a good old fashioned monster story and they are few and far between these days.
I was a King fan long before I read Mist. Well, I launched into a windy discussion anyway, sorry guys but I'm just so happy to have people to talk to about Stephen King.
I think that it would be a toss up between 'The Crate' and The Raft after M ist.
I have every Stephen King book in both Hard Cover and Paperback and about 95% of everything on audio too. Well, enough is enough. Thanks for putting up with what turned into a lengthy discussion after all.
A fellow constant reader :o)

By the way PREZELAVA, The Chattery Teeth is one of the storys in "Nightmares and Dreamscapes" (I think) Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I also have a great audio version of Chattery Teeth, "The Crate" I read in a magazine (I have a copy but it is in my lock box so can't tell you which one just now but it is also one of the stories on one of either the first or second 'Creepshow' movies, and it is done really, really well...hope this helps.

Hmm, the best short story. That is so hard to pick. As I was reading the thread, I was agreeing to many of the picks, but there were some left out. Truely scary: The Road Virus Heads North, The Monkey, I Am The Doorway, and Children of the Corn. not so scary but still great stories: Word Processor of the Gods, Quitters Inc., and All That You Love Will Be Carried Away. My all time favorites, would have to be The Mist or The Jaunt.

If you go back a bit to the collection called Night Shift you will find a short story called Night Surf. It is about a small group of 20 year olds living on a beach up in Maine after a plague has wiped out mankind. Obviously this was his early inspiration for the book The Stand. What the story captures is the sense of loss and nostalgia at being the last alive while they wait to catch the flu and the eternal sense of the sea.

Hi...you will not believe my 1st Stephen King book experience!!! I was only a very young girl. Already developed a love of reading. I couldn't have been any older than 8. I was going to my friend Carrie's house to play. As I got close I saw a paperback book outside of her fenced yard sitting in the grass on a hill. Being a good book lover I knew it was bad to leave a book outside. I picked it up and took it to her house. I said " you left your book outside". Carrie said " not my book maybe its my mom's"....Mom said " not mine never saw it before." She said keep it. The book was Carrie by Stephen King. I read it and have been hooked ever since...I am now 39. Vickie
