There are so many vivid, real characters in Kings fiction. Which one stands out for you. My personal favourite is Bart Dawes from Roadwork. Some of the minor characters are memorable too, how about Henry Bowers (IT),Collie Entragion (DESPERATION), Ginelli (THINNER), Le Bay (CHRISTINE) and of course Stephen King (THE DARK TOWER) I could go on, but, hey you guys tell me who you love and why?
I loved Stephen King in Creepshow ( Jordie) because it was cool for him to do a full appearance. I also love Gary Sinise in The Stand because I Love Gary Sinise but The Stand had alot of top names. I loved Tom Hanks in The Green Mile because he is a great actor & I read the 1st edition series 3 times before I saw the movie & I got teary eyed when I saw the movie. I could go on & on about his movies as I love them all. :)
Love the Stand movie have to say bad guy `Trashie`, good guy, Larry was pretty cool. Steve King bringing Nadia into the freezone, awesome acting Mr King.
It is true that there are many memorable characters. My first inclination was to say James Eric Gardener from Tommyknockers because he was such a selfless character who wanted to help his friend. But, I have to rank Roland at first.
I think Roland epitomizes the human experience. He has this overwhelming sense of destiny; that he has work to do. He faces enormous adversity and still he trudges on handling whatever obstacle fate has put in his way.
Roland wasn't my introduction to Stephen King, but he is what cemented King as THE author of my generation.
so many to choose, but Robinson from Dolan's Cadillac strikes a chord with me. sometimes we finish things that need to be done, no matter where it leads. didn't know a movie is being made from this short story. nice to know.
I'm going to agree with a previous poster and say Roland Deschain, from the Dark Tower series. Over 20 years from start to finish (of the series), Roland's character evolves from one that is only focused on the Tower that he's become robot-like in action and emotion to someone that learns to open up and care for others again, and is willing to give it all up for his adopted son, had the opportunity been there. He's also sympathetic, because, at the end of book 7, you understand that he is bound by fate, destiny, or whatever, and has (for how long?!?) done this all over and over again. Till he gets it right. That makes me personally feel sorry for the guy. Then again, it makes you wonder...what did he do to be the "chosen one" and have to go through everything numerous times?
Currently re- reading IT for the umpteenth time and the character Ben Haystack Hanscomb always comes back to surprise me with every reading. Love the scene in the bar where he drinks the whiskey, dunno why but Harold Lauder reminds me of Ben in a number of ways that I can never quite pin down. The passages in IT where Pennywise is gone and we get just a little taste of the entity, its thoughts on the losers, its fear of them, those passages totally chill me, terrifying cos they shock me out of that kinda cosy kids world of clubhouses, and saturday morning movies. Brilliant writing.
Jack Sawyer would have to be my fav, even though technically half of him comes from Peter Straub, I suppose. His determination and sweet sense of something greater than him reminds me of being twelve again, and how possible everything seems when you're young and oblivious (like journeying across country to save the person you love most), even if it's something cold and terrifying (like being in state custody and discovering another world on the other side where everything is burning infested and crazy). Jack sparks my imagination, and makes me wish for some grand adventure to sweep me away.
The Dark Tower character "Oy". The next cat or dog I ever own, will be named "Oy", and I am not jewish. But, " I have forgotten the face of my father. "
there are too many wonderful characters!! but among my faves in order....1.) oy 2.) jack sawyer 3.) roland 4.) jake 5.) pennywise 6.) leland gaunt...etc etc....
Did no one say Jake Chambers? I mean, this kid gets killed way too many times, and always stands strong. I liked seeing his development from a very intelligent (but sheltered) child to being a true gunslinger. I think a lot of times, he is mentally stronger than Roland, even.
Stuart in The Stand, and Larry, Ralph, Tom, Rob Lowes character, Mother Abigail, Oy, David Saul's character in Salem's Lot, Sheriff in Needful Things, and so many more.
