The skeleton crew short story to big screen. I hope its better than 1408. I was really dissapointed with it. but not as bad as Lawnmower man runningman adapts I guess. I just felt that 1408 lacked anything spooky in the movie special effects are great but stink for scares. I am crossing my fingers when i see this one. Hopefully it will be like the stand, or secret window.
The Mist is technically excellent as you would expect from the director of the green mile and shawshank. Frank Darabount is very good. As with a lot of movies made from King novels though you always seem to leave the theatre feeling that something is missing. The essence of a King novel does appear to be a difficult thing to capture on celluliod. My fave King adaptations have been Carrie which I personally believe surpasses the novel and the very dark, gritty claustrophobic atmosphere created in Misery.
Personally I was really disappointed with the ending to The Mist! I thought the story was really good, but to come all that way and have it end that way was real disappointing!!! (The movie that is. I heard the book had a different ending!)
1408 was a strange movie, kinda hard to follow when the real was really real! I guess that just makes the intensity of the movie greater! All in all I thought it was good!
First off, I absolutely hated the ending. Now, I usually shun happy endings, especially when it is SK, but this one just didn't sit well at all. Perhaps the thought of what happened at the end was too horrifying for me with a young child of my own.
Second, the CGI seemed like something I'd expect from a SK miniseries from back the 90's. I mean, several of the monsters looked (in their realism) like the Langoliers from the miniseries of the same name. The acting was fine, but the "monsters" just didn't do it for me.
What I did like about the movie was the homage to the Gunslinger in the artwork at the beginning, and how some of the monsters did resemble the artwork from Gunslinger novels. It gave a microscopic amount of hope for a Gunslinger movie...but not enough to redeem this movie in my opinion.
I have not enjoyed any of SK's true short stories when making the jump to the screen. His novellas seem to make the transition fine, but the short stories just have to have way too much added to make a worthwhile movie.
And speaking about 1408, the spookiest thing in the story was that you had no way of knowing what was happening - again, a short story really can't make the transition well. When you reveal our demons to us, they usually aren't as scary as we imagined.
