IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR WATER PUMP IS BAD.THE PUMP IMPELER IS PLASTIC AND CRACKS THEN COMES LOOSE FROME THE SHAFT. YOU NEED TO TAKE THE TIMING BELT OFF TO DO THIS JOB AND IS A GOOD TIME TO REPLACE IT ALSO. HOPE THIS HELPS! GOOD LUCK FASTJOEVW

more than likely gonna need to replace the water pump. i work for vw. we see that the waterpump propellers are made of plastic and seperate from the pulley thats aluminum. new ones are all aluminum so you dont have to worry about them coming apart. highly recomend taking to shop and definitely do the timing belt, tensioner, rollers and all that good stuff with it. it will save you a lot of money in the long run.
