I have wanted one for a long time and picked on up last week for a song. We are the proud new owners of an 89 740 gle wagon with the 16 valve engine and 5 spd. trans. we paid a whopping 300.00 for it and drove it home. Plus it only has 245,000 miles thats like almost new, runs and drives like a dream and after a few cosmetic and mechanical repairs we will be able to enjoy it for years to come.
I had a '91 740 nonturbo wagon that I bought with 80,000 miles, and drove it until it had 160,000. Nothing ever went wrong with it: The most relentless, reliable, unkillable Volvo I had owned since my '63 P1800. I only sold the 740 because it had only the driver's side airbag, and my wife in the passenger's seat felt that was unfair. So I traded up to an 850 sedan with multiple airbags. And I'm trading it this week for a 850R wagon.
Congrats on the purchase! I also spent $300 on an '89 740, though it had so many problems it was both a steal and a bargain (it lasted about 2 months, but was cheaper than a rental!). Hope yours lasts longer! I have a '90 760 which is doing quite fine, and is young at (as of yesterday) 140000.
just joined the 'hood. a quick tip in case you aren't aware of it. change the timing belt as soon as possible if it hasn't been done lately. if it breaks... engine needs a rebuild... painful lesson learned the hard way...interference engine with the 16 Valve engine.. other than that you will love the car have owned 4 others and just bought # 5...good luck and welcome to the "family"
