Hello to all!!! I just joined this neighborhood and I love wine.
Here in California we have Trader Joe's World Market and they have a Cabernet nicknamed the 2 Buck Chuck (because it costs $2.99) and it is amazing. This same brand also has a very good Shiraz for the same price.
Trade's also has a very good Malbec from Argentina called La Boca for $2.99. Also available are Port Wines for $5.99 and my German Mosels Liebefraumilch at $3.99. The German wines have gone up a little due the strong Euro.
While I was visiting Seattle I did a comparative tasting of several Charles Shaw wines, the infamous "two buck chuck" from Bronco / Trader Joe's. Some of these were of different vintages, but all were what was being sold the summer of 2008. My favorites were the Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. The Merlot and Shirah were acceptable. I was surprised that I did not like the Chardonnay which won awards last year. I think it stunk of too much sulfites.
A few weeks later I visited one of the Atlanta stores to stock up and I noticed that the lable has changed. It still has the tasteful, understated Charles Shaw label, but now bears a hideous industrial TRADER JOE'S overprint.
Buyers should know that the bottles used are VERY thin and you must be more careful than usual with them to prevent shattering.
