I own both and in most cases I'd recommend the Xbox 360 over the Wii.
Answering your question depends on the type of gamer you are and what else you're looking for in terms of entertainment.
No question about it, the Wii is a fun system. The controller is unique and intuitive which makes it easy for the entire family to play together. I think it's a great first console for a family interested in playing a few video games together.
Mostly we play Wii Sports (comes with the system) and a few other games including some classic Nintendo and Sega games we've downloaded (additional costs apply). Beyond these games though, I've been largely unimpressed with the system as a whole.
The graphics are circa 1999 and feel disappointing on today's hi-def screens. Further, most of the games are remixes of older Nintendo series (yawn) and the entire Wii menu/system controls seems like it was rushed and patched together by Nintendo. User experience design isn't one of the Wii system's strong points and the same could be said about some of the games we've rented.
The Xbox 360 on the other hand is a full entertainment center for us. If I had to estimate its usage compared to our Wii, I'd say we use it 95% of the time as compared to the Wii's 5%.
As a family gaming center, my wife and I play a lot of arcade and board games together. We also play a number of games with friends/strangers over Xbox Live (yearly subscription required). My daughter and I like to play co-op games together including family-friendly titles like Crash of the Titans, Lego Star Wars, and Viva Pinata. I enjoy a wide range of games, from racing to puzzle/platformers to first-person shooters and the Xbox 360 title list doesn't disappoint. At any given time, there are a number of new games that I want to play.
Not only are better games available for the Xbox (in my opinion), the graphics are outstanding, and Xbox Live let's me play, talk, and IM my friends. For me, gaming is a social experience and Xbox Live adds a lot of value to that experience.
What takes the Xbox over the top though is that it's so much more than a game center. We routinely download movies (regular or hi-def), tv shows, game demos, and arcade games over Xbox Live. My friends and I occasionally use the camera for video chat and we often pop in photo CDs or music CDs.
I have a 360 but I have played wii. The 369 is better if you are a serious gamer. Like you want to play just to beat the level not to have fun, not that the 360 isn't fun. The Wii is better when playing with four people because it's more interactive. I'm pretty sure that the wii doesn't have online capabilities while the 360 has. I prefer the 360 because i normally play alone.
I have a Xbox and a Wii. The Wii is alot of fun to play is cheaper and comes with a fun game. The Xbox is much more powerfull Displays in HD, has a great online network with hundreds of movies, some music videos, and TV shows to download alot in 720p HD on Xbox live (cost money tho). The Xbox can connect to your PC and display your media, pictures, TV in media center, Play DVD's, and has 811 available games. I have a media center PC with a 500 GB HD that is constantly recording TV so my Xbox is on everyday even tho i dont always play video games i use it to watch TV stored on my PC, it povides a program guide to my basic cable service, instant sport scores, and every neat feature built into media center PC's. The Wii has a neat controler that makes some games fun and gives anyone the abilty to pick up and play games. They are both great so get both.
I was brought up on Nintendo. Had a NES the first week it was out, I was the most popular kid on my block:) But if I had to choose it would be no contest, 360 easily. I would normally say it depends on the games you like but outside of your franchises like Mario and Zelda it's nothing to write home about.
And while graphics don't make a game I can say that something like Bioshock, Gears of War, GTAIV, Half Life Orange Box are incredible games to look at while having some fantastic gameplay that wouldn't be possible on something like the WII. To be quite honest I wish I hadn't bought the WII to begin with.
I have the Wii and i like it but am looking into getting a xbox 360 because the games for the wii are just too......easy and kiddy. I like playing them, but most of their games like mario kart for instance take no skill to win. It is all luck.
Clearly xbox also has a lot more great games. I will purchase my 360 after finals though :) so i am not distracted.

Many people have made false statements about the Wii. I want to fix that First, "The graphics are circa 1999..." I would say that the graphics greatly surpass those of the PS2, which was released circa 2003. Second, "'I'm pretty sure that the wii doesn't have online capabilities while the 360 has" This is false. The Wii's Wi-Fi capabilities rival the 360's. The 360 may be fast, but it requires an attachment for Wi-Fi (If it can use Wi-Fi at all). Thirdly, "Here's how it breaks down. 360 a shitload of awesome games, Wii a shitload of childish games ( with the exception of a few)." Actually, there are a bunch of gorey, hard core games for 360 (God of War, as an example) while a Wii will give you immersive games with less hardcore graphics. Less hardcore tends to come out looking childish.
All in all, It's really your preference. I prefer Wii, especially since now there's almost a Rock Band for Wii, and it is so interactive. 360 may be more of an eye candy kind of thing, but it still can't beat Wii with its joysticks alone.
I love the post about "misconceptions" about WII especially since many are wrong. 360 has a broad range of games, not just gorey games (plus God of War is a Playstation series). Sure Gears of War, Bioshock, Half Life are all adult games but Viva Pinata is a brilliant all ages game and the new Banjo game from Rare should be incredible. Plus Beyond Good and Evil 2 was just announced which was one of the best adventure games of last generation.
Mario Galaxy is fantastic as is Zelda (they usually are). I have both systems but can honestly say the WII was a mistake for myself. 360 has a variety of great games that keep getting better, WII has reached it's potential already.
Are you seriously asking that question, or being facetious? The 360 is the gaming system for real men. The Wii is for little kids and their friends. Which one are you? Ask yourself that and you will buy the correct system.
I have a Wii and I am suppose to be getting a Xbox 360 (if the seller decides to respond), but I would agree with everyone else. A 360 is a better gaming console, but the Wii is definately a fun new experience. If you have family gatherings, Wii all the way. I can't say that 360 is that family friendly (not saying it can't be) but it is too confusing for Noobs. Wii is simple and more interactive. It is almost more fun to watch people play the Wii than to actually play yourself. Especially games like Rayman, Mario & Sonic Olympics, etc. where you are doing some of the craziest motions and you have to give it your all too for you to pass or do well. You will see some of the funniest facial expressions out of people trying to get a good score.
If you can afford it, get both. Just don't bother with Wii Fit. It is the biggest waste of $90, unless you are SERIOUS about getting in to shape. If you are a true gamer, you are out of shape any way. Do you need to pay $90 for a machine to tell you are out of shape?
So here is the real break down. If you like playing games in a group and like family oriented games, then the Wii. If you like to play alone (Live doesn't count) and like computer style games then the 360.
P.S. Don't buy from the guy I bought my Xbox 360 from. It has been a week and still no repsonse from the seller.
